If one thinks that nirvana can be attained from the cessation of afflictions and aggregates, and that these things are not empty but are established by their own nature, then, since there is no change in self-nature, there will be no arising or destruction at all. So, from abandoning and ceasing which affliction and aggregate does one think one will attain nirvana? Therefore, it is unreasonable for those who assert self-nature to attain nirvana. Because of this fault, those who assert emptiness do not consider nirvana to be the nature of the cessation of afflictions or aggregates. Therefore, this accusation does not apply to us. Secondly, if the emptiness proponents do not consider nirvana to be the nature of the cessation of afflictions or aggregates, then what kind of nature do they consider it to have? There is no abandonment, no attainment, no annihilation, no permanence, no cessation, no arising; that is called nirvana. Like desire and so on, there is no abandonment; like the fruit of a renunciate, there is no attainment; like the aggregates, there is no annihilation; and like anything that is not empty, there is no permanence. Moreover, there is no cessation by nature, no arising, and the emptiness that is the nature of the pacification of all elaborations is called nirvana, because here all suffering is completely stopped. Therefore, for such a nirvana, by abandoning and ceasing which affliction and aggregate will it be attained? Where is there any conceptualization of afflictions and aggregates? As long as these conceptualizations exist, nirvana is not attained. When the mind of a yogi exhausts all elaborations and enters the state of non-arising, then it is said that nirvana is attained. As it is said in the Ratnavali: If nirvana is not non-existent, how could it be existent? The exhaustion of grasping at existence and non-existence is called nirvana. Thus it is taught. Thirdly, for those who have not realized the nature of the quiescence of the conceptualizations of nirvana, and who think of nirvana as existent and non-existent, and both or neither, they are refuted in order. The first of the four: Regarding nirvana, the Vaibhashikas consider nirvana to be substantially existent.

, and consider it to be permanent and of the nature of permanence. The Sutra School and the Red Robe School, etc., consider it to be merely without aggregates, like a candle being extinguished, and their mind is called liberation. The Sthavira School, etc., consider it to be of the nature of both real and unreal, because Nirvana is without body, senses, and consciousness, so it is unreal, and the bliss of reliance is with consciousness, so it is real, they say. For this, because the real and the unreal are negated, the nature of both also becomes negated. Therefore, first, the refutation of being real. Here, some Vaibhashikas, etc., who cling to Nirvana as real, say that Nirvana can stop the continuity of karma, afflictions, and birth and death, like a dam stopping the flow of water, it is the nature of reality, because things that are not real are not seen to be able to do that. In response to this, it is argued: Nirvana is not real, the characteristic of aging and death, should be a fault. Aging and death, without, real things do not exist. Nirvana should not be real, because it would become the characteristic of aging and death, because the real is not confused with the characteristic of aging and death. Therefore, it will also not be Nirvana, because it is the characteristic of aging and death, like consciousness, etc., think like that. Why is the real not confused with aging and death? Aging and death, without, real things do not exist, because being separated from aging and death is like a flower in the sky, it is impossible to be real. Furthermore, if Nirvana is real, Nirvana becomes conditioned. Non-conditioned real things, nowhere are seen. If Nirvana is real, then Nirvana will become conditioned, because it is real, like consciousness. Non-conditioned internal and external real things do not exist in any place, time, or tenet. Furthermore, if Nirvana is real, how is Nirvana not dependent? Non-dependent real things, none exist. If according to your view, Nirvana is real
