If phenomena had some inherent nature, then the Buddhas and Śrāvakas would know it. If phenomena were real, then they would not pass into Nirvāṇa. The wise would never be without elaboration. It is like saying this. Fourth, showing another reason why the term 'transcendental' is inappropriate: For those who assert that things have inherent nature, not only is the worldly term inappropriate, but the transcendental term is also inappropriate. If emptiness does not exist, then what has not been attained cannot be attained, the work of ending suffering cannot be done, and all afflictions cannot be abandoned. If emptiness does not exist and all this has inherent nature, then what has not been attained is only what has not been attained, so the fruit that was not previously attained will not be attained later. Similarly, suffering that has not previously come to an end will not come to an end later. All the afflictions that have not been abandoned before will not be abandoned later. Thus, if one asserts that things have inherent nature, then all the terms of the world and the transcendental will become unreasonable. Third, showing that seeing the truth is through understanding dependent origination: If liberation cannot be attained without seeing the truth, and for those who say that things have inherent nature, they cannot fully understand the truth in the way described above, then how can they fully understand the reality of the truth? Whoever sees dependent origination, sees suffering, and the arising of suffering, and cessation, and the path. Whoever sees dependent origination, the characteristic of emptiness, in a way that is without seeing, sees suffering, and the arising of suffering, and the cessation of suffering, and the paths that lead to the cessation of suffering, truly and correctly as they are. As it is said in the Sutra of the Noble One Showing That All Dharmas Are Without Entrance: Mañjuśrī, whoever sees all dharmas as unborn, knows suffering completely. Whoever sees all dharmas as emptiness, has abandoned the origin. Whoever sees all dharmas as completely passed into Nirvāṇa, has realized cessation. Mañjuśrī.

It is as widely stated in the scriptures, "Whoever sees all dharmas as devoid of inherent existence is indeed practicing the path." This concludes the commentary on the twenty-fourth chapter, the Examination of the Noble Truths, from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. Explanation of Chapter Twenty-Five The second is refuting the dispute regarding the Nirvana to be attained. This is divided into presenting the proponent's position and refuting it. The first is: If all these are empty, there is neither arising nor ceasing. By abandoning what, by ceasing what, do you wish to achieve Nirvana? Here, the Blessed One has taught two types of Nirvana to individuals who have entered the teachings of the Tathagata, practice celibacy, and cultivate dharmas in accordance with the Dharma: Nirvana with remainder and Nirvana without remainder. The first is like killing all the thieves and only the city remains; similarly, it is considered that having destroyed all the thieves of afflictions, such as the view of the aggregates, only the basis of the aggregates remains. The second is like killing all the thieves and destroying the city as well; similarly, Nirvana in which the aggregates are also completely ceased is considered Nirvana without remainder. As it is said: Where the body is destroyed and feelings cease, all perceptions are completely abandoned, the formations are nearly pacified, and consciousness is extinguished. And: When the body, without fear, experiences feelings, his mind is liberated, like the extinguishing of a lamp. Thus it is explained. These two types of Nirvana are reasonable if afflictions and aggregates cease. But when all these things are empty, and there is neither arising nor ceasing at all, then by abandoning what, by ceasing what, do you wish to achieve Nirvana? Therefore, they say that things exist inherently. The second is showing that the fault returns to itself in the refutation. Speaking of the nature of Nirvana. Refuting the clinging to Nirvana as permanent. Refuting the clinging to the Tathagata as permanent. Showing the equality of samsara and Nirvana. Refuting the dispute of denying Nirvana, and six others. The first is: If all this is not empty, there is neither arising nor ceasing. By abandoning what, by ceasing what, do you wish to achieve Nirvana?
