Refutation based on reasoning: Or all things, because of emptiness, views of permanence, etc., what, where, in what, from what will arise? If it is accepted that the taker and the taken, conventional dependent arising is like an image, then it has been shown that views of permanence, etc., are impossible. Moreover, all internal and external things, all scriptures say that because they are dependently arising, they are emptiness. Therefore, what of the aforementioned views of permanence, etc., exists outside of all things? Likewise, where do views arise and should be prevented, what of the objects of those views, permanence, etc., not included in all things, exists? What support do views arise from, and what should we prevent, what of things or persons, outside of all things, exists? From what cause do views arise, what of the cause of those views, outside of all things, exists? Because all meanings are included in all things, and all things have also been determined to be emptiness. Therefore, clinging to views of permanence, etc., is unreasonable in both truths. How is it? The sutra says: "If someone with true wisdom sees dependent arising as it truly is, as constant, permanent, without accumulation, as it is, without error, unborn and unmanifest, unmade and unconditioned, unobstructed and unimpeded, peaceful and undestroyed, unseized and endless, not seeing the nature of nirvana, non-existent and accumulating, false and unreal, sick and wounded and arrow, sinful and impermanent, suffering and emptiness, and truly sees selflessness, then, did I arise in the past? Or did I not arise in the past? What was I in the past? What was I like in the past? Thus, previously

Like it is said, "not relying on the extremes of existence or non-existence," and so on. Third, the limb of accomplishing the activity, which is the act of gratitude: As it has been said before, in order to definitely liberate from the profound dependent arising and the cycle of existence, by showing the path without reversing it, the teacher, the Bhagavan, became very pleased, and wanting to pay homage in order to remember the kindness, He who, with compassion, has taken hold, For the sake of abandoning all views, Has taught the holy Dharma, To Gautama, I pay homage. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, without regard for gain, honor, or the desire for reciprocation, with compassion, has taken hold of the beings to be tamed, and for the sake of abandoning all views that cling to phenomena as the root of suffering, rescues from the precipice of samsara and nirvana, or is relied upon by the noble and holy ones, or the good Dharma is the holy Dharma, that is, dependent arising, without cessation, etc., the characteristic of pacifying all elaborations, without reversing it, I pay homage to that unsurpassed and incomparable teacher. What is the name? Because he was born into the lineage of the sage Gautama, he is known as Gautama in the three realms. This is the commentary on the twenty-seventh chapter of the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, called "Examination of Views." Concluding remarks: For the sake of the Buddha's teachings to remain for a long time, and for those who wish to enter the profound path of the fortunate ones, in order to place them on the path that pleases the Buddha, it was initiated with immaculate pure intention, this is the essence of all the scriptures of the Sugata, the profound reality, the Middle Way free from extremes, in order to correctly clarify the Root Wisdom, this commentary, which clarifies the meaning of the words, has been made. Whatever small amount of merit is obtained from this effort, and all the merit accumulated in the three times, all of it is gathered together with wisdom, and dedicated as a cause for all beings to attain omniscience. This commentary on the Root of the Middle Way, called "The Light of Reasonableness," was composed by the monk Zhonnu Lodro at the urging of his own students. May this cause the light of correct view to increase in the minds of immeasurable beings! Homage to the venerable Redawa! Understand the meaning of the profound Middle Way!
