What is arising? That is said to be emptiness. That is what is designated dependently, that is the Middle Way. As we see it, whatever arises dependently on causes and conditions, such as sprouts and consciousness, internal and external things, is without inherent existence. Whatever is without inherent existence, the Blessed One said that is emptiness. As it is said, in the sutra: Whatever arises from conditions is unarisen; it has no inherent nature of arising. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is mindful. Thus it is said. Therefore, emptiness is like a chariot being designated as a chariot based on its parts such as wheels. It is designated based on causes and conditions. Whatever is designated dependently is without inherent existence, and whatever is without inherent existence is emptiness. That emptiness, which is characterized by being without inherent existence, is designated as the Middle Way because it is free from the two extremes of existence and non-existence. Thus, emptiness, dependent designation, and the Middle Way are all synonyms for dependent origination. Because whatever is dependent origination is emptiness. Because there is no phenomenon that is not dependently originated. Therefore, there is no phenomenon that is not empty. As it is said in the Shataka: Whatever, wherever, whenever, does not exist independently, there is no such thing. Therefore, at no time, in no place, is there anything permanent. As it is said. In the sutra: The wise will understand the phenomena of dependent origination, and will never rely on extreme views. Knowing the phenomena with causes and conditions, there is no such thing as a phenomenon without causes and conditions. As it is said, because there is no phenomenon that is not dependently originated, and because dependent origination is also emptiness, therefore there is no phenomenon that is not empty. Because, as we see it, dependent origination itself is emptiness, therefore it does not become a fault as stated by others. 2. Transcendental terminology is unreasonable.

Pa. The three objects of refuge are unreasonable. Of the two, what to adopt and discard, Dharma and non-Dharma, are unreasonable, the first of which is: Of the three, Sangha, Dharma, and Buddha, are unreasonable. The first of which is: The first of the two, brief explanation and detailed explanation, is: If all these are not empty, then there is no arising and no destruction. According to you, who speak of things as having inherent nature, if all these things are not empty, then because their nature does not change, there will be no arising and no destruction. And when there is no arising and no destruction, then certainly, the four noble truths will not exist for you and will be a fault. In this detailed explanation: The object of focus, the four truths, are unreasonable, and the realization of the result of the four truths is unreasonable, and the result of realization, the state of stream-enterer, is unreasonable. The first of the three is: Why, if there is no arising and ceasing, do the four noble truths not exist? If it is not dependent arising, how can suffering exist? That which is said to be impermanent suffering does not exist in its own nature. Whatever has inherent nature is not dependent arising, and if it is not dependent arising, how can suffering exist? That which is not dependent arising is not impermanent, and suffering is also impermanent, for whatever is impermanent is suffering, as the Bhagavan said. And in the Hundred Verses it is said: Impermanence certainly harms. Whatever has harm is not happiness. Therefore, whatever is impermanent, all of that becomes suffering. Like that which is said, the suffering that is of the nature of impermanence does not exist for those who speak of things as having inherent nature. It is not only that suffering is unreasonable for those who speak of things as having inherent nature, but also that the origin is unreasonable, because it is the place of origin from its own nature. What can become the origin? Therefore, for those who harm emptiness, there is no origin. Because suffering arises from this, the cause of suffering is called origin. If suffering exists by its own nature, then because its arising is meaningless, what can become the origin? Understanding its cause is meaningless. Therefore, emptiness
