If one asserts that dependent arising arises from its own nature and then refutes that arising with reason, it becomes a nihilistic emptiness, like smashing a vase with a hammer, and not a genuine emptiness. As it is said in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "If dependent arising is its own nature, then denying it destroys things. If emptiness becomes the cause of destroying things, that is not reasonable; therefore, it does not exist." The sutra also says: "O Protector of the World, emptiness does not make phenomena empty; rather, phenomena themselves are empty." And so on. If it is said that the arising and ceasing of forms and so on are merely appearances to a deluded mind, and therefore one does not accept that they are established by their own nature, then, just as the arising and ceasing of forms and so on, and their functions, are merely appearances to a deluded consciousness, so too are illusions and so on. Since they also appear to a deluded consciousness as arising, ceasing, and functioning, how does one differentiate between what is true and what is not true? If it is said that although both are similar in appearing to a deluded consciousness, one clings to and names things as deceiving or not deceiving in their function according to worldly appearances, and therefore one differentiates between what is true and what is false, then the conventional truth becomes merely a fabrication of worldly conventions and names, devoid of any meaning upon investigation. That which arises as a mere existent dependent on something else should not be called a true conventional truth. Therefore, although teachers such as Śāntarakṣita and Haribhadra respect this system of the Essence of Wisdom, this position is not without flaws. Second, establishing the nature of ultimate reality: In the sutra *Teaching the Truths of the Conventional and the Ultimate*, it says: "Son of the gods, if the ultimate truth were truly to become an object of body, speech, and mind, it would not be counted as an ultimate truth, but would only become a conventional truth. Son of the gods, however, the ultimate truth is beyond all expression, truly unborn, unceasing, unspeakable, and separate from the knower and the known, until it transcends the realm of the omniscient wisdom that possesses all supreme aspects."
