Going here, doing there, staying here, going there, and so on, all of these are contained within everything, and because everything is emptiness, they cannot be established and are harmful. Therefore, saying that everything is emptiness is not good. Second, refuting it, first is to state it briefly, and then to explain it in detail. First: The explanation for this is that you, because you have not understood the necessity of emptiness, emptiness itself, and the meaning of emptiness, therefore it is harmful to do so. Answering the one who refutes in this way: You, who assert the existence of things, because you have not understood the necessity of emptiness, for what purpose emptiness is taught, the definition of emptiness, and the meaning to which the word emptiness refers, therefore, with your own conceptualization, you cling to non-existence as the meaning of emptiness. If all of these are empty, there will be no arising and no destruction, and so on, speaking of blame, and having great distrust in us, like this, it is harmful to yourself. What you have completely accepted, that is not the meaning of emptiness spoken of in our treatise. Because you have not understood the meaning of emptiness, you also do not understand emptiness, and you also do not understand the necessity of emptiness. So, what is the necessity of emptiness here? Here it says: Because karma and afflictions are exhausted, there is liberation, karma and afflictions come from conceptualization, those come from elaboration, and elaboration will be prevented by emptiness. Like this, it has been said before. Therefore, in order to pacify all elaborations, emptiness is taught. But you think that emptiness has no meaning, and you only spread the net of elaboration, therefore you have not understood the necessity of emptiness. What is emptiness? That is also: It is not known from elsewhere, it is peaceful, it is not elaborated by all elaborations, there is no conceptualization, it is not a different meaning, that is the definition of reality. Like this it has been said. Therefore, emptiness is the nature of the removal of all elaborations, how could it be non-existence? Therefore, you also do not understand emptiness. So, relying on what meaning is the word emptiness used? That is, whatever is dependent arising.

It is explained as emptiness. That is established by dependence. That itself is the Middle Way. Thus it will be explained that the meaning of the word 'dependent arising' is the meaning of the word 'emptiness,' but the meaning of 'non-existent thing' is not the meaning of the word 'emptiness.' Therefore, even the meaning of the word 'emptiness' is not known. Seeking faults while not knowing will only harm yourself. Second, the extensive explanation, in which there are three parts: incidentally establishing the two truths, directly refuting objections, and showing that seeing dependent arising leads to the realization of truth. First: Who is it that seeks faults with the Madhyamikas in the way that has been said? It is those of one's own party who speak of entities, who do not know the distinction between the two truths of the scriptures and are intent on merely reciting the texts. Therefore, in order to dispel others' wrong conceptions of the meaning of the scriptures, the teacher first, by way of establishing without error the two truths taught in the scriptures by the Bhagavan, says: Buddhas teach the Dharma, relying truly on two truths: the truth of worldly convention and the truth of ultimate meaning. Here there are two: general meaning and specific meaning. First, there are two: determining the essence and establishing the individual characteristics. First: In the Entering the Middle Way, it is said that Buddhas and noble ones accept two truths in order to grasp the two essences of objects, seeing things as true and seeing them as false. By truly seeing all things as false, one will grasp the two essences of objects. That which is seen as true is the ultimate, and seeing as false is considered the conventional truth. As it is said. There is no division into two truths in terms of the self-nature of these things, but rather the two truths are distinguished in terms of how children, individual beings, perceive them with their minds, and how noble ones perceive them with their wisdom. Thus, for these external and internal things, children, from beginningless time, cling to the conceptualizations that follow after names, being self-satisfied and manifestly attached to knowable, knower, expressible, expression, pillar, pot, birth.
