Because arising and dependent origination are incompatible with the suffering of the three sufferings themselves and are of the nature of harm, they are called suffering. This is known as suffering only by the noble ones, not by the childish ones, therefore it is called the noble truth of suffering. As it is said: A single hair on the palm of the hand is not perceived by people. When it enters the eye, it causes discomfort and harm. Children are like the palm of the hand, they do not perceive the suffering of conditioned existence as a hair. The noble ones are like the eye, therefore they are very displeased. As it is said. If suffering is the arising and destruction of conditioned existence, that is reasonable. When there is no arising or destruction at all because of emptiness, how can there be suffering? If there is no suffering, then there is no origin either. For example, if suffering arises from a certain cause, and the cause that arises is characterized by karma and afflictions, that is called the origin. When there is no result, i.e., suffering, a cause without a result is unreasonable, therefore there is no origin either. Separation from suffering and non-arising is called cessation. When there is no suffering, what ceases to become cessation? Therefore there is no cessation either. If there is no cessation of suffering, how can there be the eightfold noble path that leads to the cessation of suffering? Therefore there is no path either. Thus, for you who say that all things are empty, it will follow that there are no four noble truths. The second part has three points. The first point is that the Sangha Jewel is unreasonable, which also has three points. The unreasonable aspect is that the act of knowing the four truths is unreasonable. If the four truths do not exist, what fault will there be? Because there are no four noble truths, complete knowledge, abandonment, cultivation, and realization are not reasonable. If there are no four noble truths, then completely knowing suffering with aspects such as impermanence, abandoning the origin of suffering, cultivating the path that leads to the cessation of suffering, and realizing the cessation of suffering are all unreasonable. Second, the result of realization is unreasonable.
