As it is said, "That is actually false. How can a true result arise from a false seed?" Second, refuting separately. Refuting the cause of attachment and aversion, the pleasant and unpleasant; refuting the cause of ignorance, the inverted. There are two: First, moreover, by this reasoning, the pleasant and unpleasant are not inherently existent. Because, relying on what is called pleasant, that which is established as unpleasant does not exist without relying on the pleasant. Therefore, the pleasant is not reasonable. If it is said that there is something called pleasant, then it must depend on the unpleasant. The unpleasant that is relied upon to be established as pleasant also does not exist without relying on the pleasant. Therefore, the establishment of the pleasant as inherently existent is unreasonable. Just as the pleasant does not exist, so too the unpleasant does not exist. Because, relying on what is established as unpleasant, that pleasant does not exist without relying on the unpleasant. Therefore, the unpleasant is not reasonable. If it is said that there is something called unpleasant, because it is related, it must depend on the pleasant, like long and short, or this shore and the other shore. The pleasant that is relied upon to establish and distinguish the unpleasant does not exist without relying on the unpleasant that is relied upon. Because of that, the pleasant that is relied upon to establish the unpleasant is not another related thing, therefore the establishment of the unpleasant as inherently existent is unreasonable. Because the pleasant and unpleasant do not exist, therefore, if the pleasant does not exist, how can there be desire? If the unpleasant does not exist, how can there be hatred? If the signs of the pleasant and unpleasant do not exist, because there is no cause, the desire and hatred that arise from the cause of the signs of the pleasant and unpleasant also do not exist. Second, there are four: refuting the nature of inversion, refuting the basis, explaining other ways of refuting, and explaining the necessity of refuting. First, now, by showing that there is no inversion, we show that there is also no ignorance. If it is said that taking impermanence as permanence, taking non-self as self, etc., are improper ways of thinking, thus clinging.

If it is inverted, there is no impermanence in emptiness, so how is attachment not inverted? Here there are four inversions: the five aggregates are destroyed and impermanent moment by moment, but one clings to them as permanent; whatever is impermanent is suffering, and all formations are also impermanent, therefore the five aggregates are of the nature of suffering, but one clings to them as happiness; as it is said: "With semen and blood as the seed, born and grown by excrement and urine, knowing the nature to be impure, who desires this body?". Thus, being ignorant of the impure nature of the body, one clings to it as pure; and observing the aggregates, clinging to what is empty of self and what belongs to self as self, these are all inversions. These four inversions are the cause of ignorance. If clinging to impermanence as permanence, which is empty of permanence, is an inversion, then since the aggregates are empty by nature, even impermanence does not exist, so how can clinging to permanence, which is contrary to this, not be an inversion? Therefore, there is no inversion of permanence, because there is no non-inversion to counteract it. Just as there is no impermanence in the emptiness of the aggregates, which are unborn by nature, so too there is no suffering, impurity, and selflessness, therefore their opposites, happiness, purity, and self, are also not inverted. Since there are no inversions, how can ignorance, which is their cause, exist? Because there is no cause. As the Blessed One said: "Ignorance and whatever arises from ignorance as a condition, have never existed, ignorance does not exist in the world, therefore I say this is ignorance.". Furthermore, if clinging to impermanence as permanence is an inversion, then clinging to emptiness as impermanence, how can it not be an inversion? If, because of untruth, clinging to impermanence as permanence is an inversion, then since the aggregates are empty by nature, even impermanence does not exist, so how can clinging to impermanence not be an inversion? When both permanence and impermanence are inversions, what
