These do not exist. These afflictions, like paintings on a wall or ripening fruit, depend on a basis. If that basis is examined and found to be a "self" or mind, then those (self or mind) have already been refuted, so the basis of these afflictions does not exist either. Without any basis, the afflictions that depend on a basis do not exist. Secondly, if the basis of afflictions, the previously established "self," does not exist, but afflictions arise relying on an afflicted mind, and that mind arises simultaneously with the afflictions, this is also unreasonable. Like examining one's own body, afflictions, because they are afflictions, do not exist in the afflicted person in five ways. Like examining one's own body, the afflicted person does not exist in the afflictions in five ways. Just as when examining one's own body, the five aggregates of form, etc., the self that is apprehended as "I" and "mine" does not exist when sought in five ways, so too, afflictions do not exist when sought in five ways in the afflicted person. Like this, the afflicted person is not the afflictions themselves, because the burner and the burned would become one. Nor are they other, because the afflictions would not arise from the cause of the afflicted person. Because they are neither the same nor other, the aspect of being a basis and what depends on it, and what is associated with it, is also unreasonable. Like examining one's own body, the afflicted person does not exist in the afflictions in five ways. Here, the afflictions themselves are not the afflicted person, because the agent and the action would become one. Nor are they other, because it would become without dependence. Therefore, they do not exist as mutual basis and what depends on it, and the afflictions do not possess the afflicted person. Thirdly, regarding the refutation of causes, there are two types: general refutation and separate refutation. The first is divided into two: refutation of the entity and refutation of the object. The first is: If you have refuted the afflictions, even so, the causes of afflictions, the pleasant and unpleasant and the reversed, etc., exist for the time being, and because they exist, the afflictions also exist, if you say so, the pleasant and unpleasant and the reversed do not exist from their own nature.

Now, what are the afflictions that depend on the perversion of what is pleasing and unpleasing? Those perversions of what is pleasing and unpleasing are not inherently existent either, because they are interdependent and because refutations will be explained. When those are not inherently existent, then what are those afflictions that depend on the perversion of what is pleasing and unpleasing? It is thought that because the causes of those afflictions, what is pleasing, unpleasing, and perversion, do not exist, the afflictions are not inherently existent. The second is, afflictions exist because their objects, such as forms and sounds, the six objects, exist. If so, forms, sounds, tastes, and tactile objects, and the six, such as smells and dharmas, are the basis, the objects of attachment, hatred, and delusion. You consider the six objects from forms to dharmas to be the basis, the objects. By what? By attachment, hatred, and delusion. Among these, attachment arises from imputing the aspect of what is pleasing to forms and so on, hatred arises from imputing the aspect of what is unpleasing, and delusion arises from imputing the aspect of perversion, such as permanence and self. Are these six objects established in meaning as the objects of afflictions? Forms, sounds, tastes, and tactile objects, and dharmas, are merely, like hairs and so on that do not exist to those with cataracts, these forms and sounds have become non-existent in nature, you consider them to be merely the objects of attachment and so on, meaning they are without inherent existence. If they are not inherently existent, then how are they objects? Like a city of gandharvas, like mirages and dreams. Those six objects are like a city of gandharvas and so on, merely objects established from perversion. When it is like that, like an illusory person, like an image, how could what is pleasing and unpleasing arise in those? This shows that the signs of what is pleasing and unpleasing that arise from a reversed basis are also false. As it is said, the aggregates that arise from grasping at self, grasping at self
