As the earth is the nature of Dharma, the guides are the Dharmakaya. The nature of Dharma is not knowable, it cannot be known. Thus it is said. Therefore, in the examination of the Tathagata, the world of mind is examined as without self-nature. Second, to establish that the vessel world is without self-nature: Just as the sentient world is without self-nature, so too is the vessel world without self-nature. What is the self-nature of the Tathagata? That is the self-nature of this going. The self-nature of the Tathagata is without, the self-nature of this going is without. In the manner as it is said, whatever is the self-nature of the Tathagata that is free from all extremes, that is also the self-nature of this going, the vessel world. Therefore, just as the Tathagata is without self-nature, so too should it be known that the self-nature of this going is also without self-nature. How going is without self-nature, thus it is shown by the examination of conditions and so forth. Therefore, in the sutra it is said: The Dharma that is always unborn is the Tathagata. All Dharmas are also like the Tathagata. Those with childish minds, those who grasp at signs, in the world, practice Dharmas that do not exist. The Tathagata, the one without outflows, is like an image of virtuous Dharma. Here there is no suchness, nor is there a Tathagata. All the worlds see only an image. Thus it is said. In the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, the chapter on the Examination of the Tathagata is the commentary on the twenty-second chapter. Explanation of the Twenty-third Chapter. In the twenty-third examination of perversions, refuting the establishment of the self-nature of afflictions, refuting the removal of antidotes to afflictions, of the two. In the first, refuting the essence of afflictions, refuting the basis, refuting the cause, and the first of the three. Here it is said: There is a stream of existence, because its cause is the existence of afflictions such as desire. The cause of karma and afflictions, the births that pass from one death to another, is the stream of existence, and the main cause of that is the afflictions, because those who have abandoned afflictions do not have it. If there are causes such as afflictions, then there is also a stream of existence,

If those are not truly existent, it is like this. The characteristic of afflictions is that whatever arises from them makes the continuum of sentient beings unable to be pacified. Attachment, hatred, delusion, etc., are said to arise from self-cause conceptualization. Suffering and the unlovely as objects of focus arise entirely in dependence. The Blessed One said, 'Desire, your root, know that it arises from conceptualization.' Because of this, attachment, hatred, delusion, etc., are said to arise from conceptualization, which is the nature of improper attention, such as taking the impure as pure. These three, attachment, etc., arise entirely in dependence on the lovely and unlovely as objects of focus, and on perversion, respectively. Like this, attachment arises from the lovely, hatred arises from the unlovely, and delusion arises from perversion. Because it is the cause of the self-cause of the mind that grasps perversely, conceptualization is the common cause of all three. Therefore, whatever arises in dependence on the lovely and unlovely and on perversion, those are not existent by nature, therefore afflictions are not truly existent. If afflictions such as attachment were established by nature, then they would not depend on the lovely, unlovely, etc., but they do arise in dependence on the lovely and unlovely and on perversion. Therefore, those afflictions are not existent by nature, they are not truly existent. The second is refuting the self and refuting the mind with afflictions, the first of which is: Furthermore, the existence and non-existence of a self are not established in any way. If that does not exist, how are the existence and non-existence of those afflictions established? The existence and non-existence of a self are not established in any way, as has already been explained in detail. Therefore, if that self does not exist, then how can the existence and non-existence of the afflictions, the dharmas that depend on it, be established? Just as if there is no wall, there is no picture that depends on it. Why, if there is no self, do the afflictions not exist? Whose are these afflictions? That is also not established as existent. Of no one
