If they arise together, it is also unreasonable. Now, in which aggregate does one abide and die, and will that one arise? That is, the one who is dying is born, which is extremely contradictory. Thus, even in the three times, if the continuum of existence does not exist, then what does not exist in the three times, how can it be the continuum of existence? Because when the last existence has ceased, has not ceased, and is ceasing, the first existence does not exist. Therefore, like this, it is unreasonable for the continuum of existence to arise in the three times. At that time, what does not exist in the three times, how can it be the continuum of existence? Therefore, in every way, the continuum of existence does not exist. Therefore, the continuum of the arising and ceasing of the fruit and the cause, because that is existence. What is said like that is said unreasonably. Therefore, if one asserts that things exist, one will fall into the fault of viewing permanence and annihilation. Therefore, it is established that things do not arise. The Bhagavan also said: The three realms are like a dream, without essence. They quickly perish and are impermanent, like an illusion. There is no coming, and no going from here. The continuums are always empty and without characteristics. This is the commentary on the twenty-first chapter of the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, Examination of Arising and Ceasing.

If it is said that the Tathagata is not considered to have attained realization, what is the reason? Because their ignorance is extremely great, although various manifestations of reason can refute it, due to long-standing habit, it still does not change or disappear. This great ignorance of yours leads to the understanding that the continuation of samsara will not be cut off and will be very long. If the Tathagata truly exists in a self-natured way, then is it the self-nature of the skandhas such as form? Or is it different from the skandhas? Does the Tathagata possess the skandhas? Or do the skandhas possess the Tathagata? Or, like Devadatta possessing wealth, does the Tathagata possess the skandhas? Analyzing in various ways, this is not reasonable. Not the skandhas, nor different from the skandhas, the Tathagata does not have skandhas, nor do the skandhas have the Tathagata, the Tathagata is not a possessor of skandhas, then what exactly is the Tathagata? First of all, the skandhas themselves are not the Tathagata, because this would make the agent and the action the same, and would face arising and ceasing like the skandhas. The Tathagata is also not something different from the skandhas, because this would lead to arising without appropriation and would lose the characteristics of the skandhas. The Tathagata does not rely on the skandhas, nor do the skandhas rely on the Tathagata, because like a staff and a tree, they do not have independently existing entities. The Tathagata is also not a possessor of skandhas, because since it is neither the same nor different, then possession has no meaning. These five aspects can actually be reduced to the two aspects of same and different, but considering the way of clinging to the view of the destructible aggregate, five aspects are proposed. Thus, analyzing in five ways, what exactly is that non-existent Tathagata? It means that there is nothing. The second part, refuting self-nature and other-nature substantiality, refuting the appropriator and appropriation, and the conclusion of the refutation, the first of these three parts is: Here, those in our own school who assert the existence of a person say: Because the above-mentioned faults would arise, they would not say that the skandhas are the Tathagata, nor are they different from the skandhas, nor does the Tathagata possess the skandhas, nor do the skandhas possess the Tathagata.
