And what arises now: If it were not there, how would the past and present depend on it? Without depending on the future, these two cannot be established. Therefore, neither the past nor the present time exists. This is the second time reversal. Just as the three times are analyzed and cannot be established, similarly, through best, worst, middle, etc., good and non-good and indeterminate, birth and abiding and destruction, desire realm and form realm and formless realm, one and two and many, the previous end and the middle part and the later end, trainees and non-trainees and neither trainees nor non-trainees, day and night, half-month and moon and sun waning and year, etc., all things related to the three things, should be known to be explained through the analysis of the three times. Whether the best, middle, and worst depend or do not depend, they cannot be established, etc., should be known. Second, refuting the argument: If time exists, because it has measure through the distinctions of moment, instant, and short time, etc. Time is not considered to have measure, because time does not exist. For example: Non-abiding time is not apprehended, because the time to be apprehended, abiding does not exist, how is unapprehended time measured? If something called time, existing as a permanent entity different from moment, etc., then it is considered to have measure through moment, etc., that does not exist. Therefore, non-permanent time is not considered to have the measure of moment, etc. If time is of a permanent, abiding nature, and it is manifested by moment, etc., as it is said: Time ripens beings, time gathers creatures, time awakens sleepers, it is difficult to transcend time. Because such characteristics appear, there is permanent time. Even so, the permanent abiding time that is manifested by moment, etc., and can be apprehended does not exist, because it has not been considered different from moment, etc. Thus

How can time, which neither abides nor is grasped, be established by moments and so forth? It is simply impossible. Secondly, refuting time that is established dependently: If it is said that it is true that there is no permanent entity called "time" that is different from form and so on, but that there is no fault because time, which is established in dependence on conditioned things such as form, is apprehended through moments and so on, then: If time depends on things, where is time when there are no things? If time is established in dependence on things, when things are empty of inherent existence, where is time that is established in dependence on them? Therefore, if no things exist, how can time be seen to exist? Because it has been extensively explained above, and because refutations will be explained, if no things exist, how can time be seen to exist? Because there is no time, there are no moments and so on at that time. Therefore, time is not established by its very nature of having measure, and because there is no time, the inherent existence of things is also not established. The Sutra of the Power of the Elephant says: "If phenomena had any inherent existence, the Victorious One with his Hearers would know it. The eternal phenomena would not pass into sorrow. The wise would never be without elaboration." This is the commentary on the chapter on the examination of time, the nineteenth chapter, from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. Explanation of Chapter Twenty. In the twentieth chapter, the examination of the aggregate, there are three parts: refuting the result produced by the aggregate, refuting the result produced by the non-aggregate, and summarizing the refutation. The first part has two sections: an extensive explanation and a summary of the meaning. The first section has ten parts: examining and refuting whether the result exists or not, examining and refuting giving and not giving, refuting simultaneous prior existence, refuting the change of the state of the cause, examining and refuting cessation and non-cessation, examining and refuting seeing and not seeing, examining and refuting contact and non-contact, examining and refuting emptiness and non-emptiness, examining and refuting one and many, and examining and refuting the existence and non-existence of essence. The first of these ten is: If time exists, it is because it is a co-operative cause for the arising of the result. Here, even though there is an aggregate of causes and conditions such as seeds for a sprout, it does not arise because the difference of time is not near. Like the non-Buddhists.
