The thought of "I" and "mine" disappears regarding the aggregates, sources, and elements. Regarding the meaning of "I" and "mine," the teacher Lodrö Tänpa said that those who, like the Samkhyas, consider the self to be a knower, view the four aggregates of name as the self and form etc. as what belongs to the self. The Vaisheshikas etc., who consider the self to be a substance, view the aggregate of form as the self and the other four as what belongs to the self. It is said that in the place where the twenty views of the collection of fears are explained, the five from "form is the self" to "consciousness is the self" are viewed as the self, and the remaining fifteen, such as "the self possesses form," are viewed as what belongs to the self, and because there is no clear object, they will be abandoned. By abandoning these, the four kinds of clinging, including the clinging to desire, will also cease. When clinging ceases, birth, which is characterized by renewed existence, will also cease. Therefore, the order of the reversal of birth is established in this way. Liberation comes from the exhaustion of karma and afflictions. Thus, when clinging is exhausted, existence, which is conditioned by it, will not arise. When clinging and existence cease, birth and old age and death etc. will not arise. Thus, liberation comes from the exhaustion of karma and afflictions. Therefore, it abides in this. So, what exhaustion will cause the exhaustion of karma and afflictions? Karma and afflictions arise from conceptual thoughts. These conceptual thoughts arise from elaboration, and elaboration ceases through emptiness. Virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and afflictions such as desire, arise from conceptual thoughts that arise from improperly attending to form etc. As it is said, "Desire, hatred, and delusion are said to arise from conceptualization." And in the sutra it is also said, "Desire, your root, know that it arises from conceptual thought. If you do not conceptualize, therefore you will not arise in me." These conceptual thoughts also arise from elaboration, such as knowledge and what is to be known, what is to be said and what says it, pots and cloths etc., which are characterized by habituation from beginningless samsara. The elaboration of the world also ceases by viewing all things as emptiness. Therefore, emptiness relies on the nature of completely pacifying all elaboration, and thus becomes separated from elaboration.

Because of being separated from bondage, conceptualization will also cease, and when conceptualization ceases, actions and afflictions will also cease. When these cease, birth will cease. Therefore, emptiness alone is the characteristic of ceasing all elaborations, and thus it is called Nirvana. As stated in the "Hundred Treatises": In short, the Dharma taught by the Tathagatas is non-harming. Emptiness is Nirvana; here, there are only these two. As it is said. Secondly, refuting the contradictions in the scriptures regarding this: If the thought of "I" and "mine" disappears in all things, internal and external, then that is Suchness. Then, how does it not contradict what the Bhagavan said: "Oneself is one's own protector; who else could be the protector? By well taming oneself, the wise will attain heaven." And, "Black and white actions will not be destroyed; one will experience what one has done." How does it not contradict such extensive teachings? Here, there is no self and no sentient being; these phenomena are with causes. Similarly, why didn't the Bhagavan also say, "All phenomena are without self"? Therefore, the intention of the Bhagavan's teachings should be sought. The Bhagavan, in general scriptures, sometimes affirmed "self" and sometimes taught "no-self." The Buddhas sometimes taught "self" and "no-self," and sometimes taught neither "self" nor "no-self." The intention is this: The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, with great compassion, wishing to guide beings of inferior, middling, and superior capacities, for those inferior beings whose minds are obscured by the darkness of wrong views, who engage in denigrating the past and future, saying, "This world does not exist, the ripening of the fruits of good and bad actions does not exist, the arising of sentient beings by transformation does not exist," and so on, thereby denigrating the next life and the self, turning their backs on the path to heaven and liberation, and constantly engaging in evil and non-virtuous deeds, in order to turn them away from non-virtuous deeds, at times say, "Oneself is one's own protector; who else could be the protector?" Thus, they postulate and establish the self.
