It is not said that actions, results, agents, etc., do not exist. However, it is established that these things are without inherent existence. If one thinks that there is a fault because without inherent existence, nothing can be done, that is not the case. This is because we have not seen only things with inherent existence doing things, and we have only seen things without inherent existence doing things. For example, we see that only things like pots, which are without inherent existence, are able to perform their own functions, such as drawing water, in the world. Furthermore, that things without inherent existence can act can be understood from this very clear example: How does the Teacher emanate apparitions? He emanates them with the perfection of miraculous powers, and that apparition also emanates, again like emanating others. Just as the Teacher, the Bhagavan, emanates an apparition similar to himself through the power of the perfection of miraculous powers, and when that apparition again emanates another apparition, any apparition that emanates another apparition is empty and without inherent existence. Likewise, any other apparition that is emanated by the apparition is also empty and without inherent existence. Even so, those apparitions without inherent existence have names such as action, activity, and agent. Similarly, whatever action the agent does is like the form of an apparition. For example, an apparition emanates another apparition, just like that. Here, whatever is the agent of action is like the form of an apparition, that is, empty of inherent existence. Whatever action is done by the agent without inherent existence is also empty of inherent existence. For example, just as an apparition emanates another apparition, it should be understood in that way. Not only is it reasonable to view non-inherent existence through the example of apparitions, but also through these examples, it should be clearly understood that things are without inherent existence, as follows: Afflictions, actions, and bodies, agents and results, like a city of gandharvas, like mirages, like dreams. Afflictions such as desire, meritorious and non-meritorious and unwavering actions, the body, the agent self, the ripening of karmic results, and the lord and the co-emergent cause are all according to the differences of place and time.

Just as the appearance of mansions, men, and women in the sky is like a city of Gandharvas; and the appearance of extremely clear water due to the movement of sunlight and wind is like a mirage; like a dream, one should know that clinging to illusory appearances as true is merely a false imputation and has no inherent nature. Therefore, precisely because even in conventional terms, it is not accepted that things have inherent existence, only the Madhyamikas do not fall into the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. This should be understood. This is the commentary on the seventeenth chapter, "Examination of Action," from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. །། Explanation of Chapter Eighteen In the eighteenth chapter, "Examination of the Self," there are five parts: 1. How to enter Suchness; 2. Refuting contradictions with scriptures; 3. The order of revealing Suchness; 4. The nature of Suchness; 5. The greatness of Suchness. The first is divided into two: 1. The main text; 2. Explaining its result, Nirvana. The first part is: Here it is said, if afflictions, actions, body, agent, and results are like cities of Gandharvas, etc., and although they are not Suchness, they appear as Suchness to children, then what is Suchness here? And how does one enter Suchness? Because no inherent nature is observed in internal and external phenomena, the grasping of self and what belongs to self is completely exhausted. This is Suchness. The way to enter Suchness is as stated in the Entering the Middle Way: "All afflictions and faults arise from the view of the collection; the wise see that it arises from view; having realized that the self is the object of this, the yogi then prevents this self." As it is said, here the yogi wants to enter Suchness and wants to abandon all afflictions and faults, so first he should contemplate what the root of this cycle of existence is. Having investigated in this way, he sees that the root of the cycle of existence is the view of the collection, and he also sees that the self is the object of the view of the collection. Because the self is not observed, the view of the collection is abandoned. Having abandoned it, he sees that all afflictions and faults cease. Therefore, one should first contemplate what this "self," which is the object of grasping as self, is. That self should also be examined.
