However, it is not non-existent. Sprouts and other continuities arise manifestly from seeds. From that, fruits are born. If there are no seeds, then they will not arise either. Here, although the seed is momentary, the cause for the continuity of sprouts, stems, nodes, leaves, and so on to arise is that it ceases after becoming a thing. The continuity of sprouts and so on that manifestly arises from seeds, although its cause may be small, gradually gathers together, and since there is no lack of cooperating conditions, a vast collection of fruits will arise. If there are no seeds, then the continuity of sprouts and so on will not arise either. If the seed ceases without becoming the cause of the continuity of sprouts and so on, then it will fall into annihilation. Why? Because continuity arises from the seed, and fruit will arise from the continuity. The seed precedes the fruit. Therefore, it is neither annihilation nor permanence. Because continuity arises from the seed, and fruit arises from the continuity, therefore the seed is not annihilated. If the seed does not cease and the continuity of sprouts and so on arises, then the seed will become permanent. However, the seed precedes the arising of fruit and ceases, therefore it is also not permanent. Just as the reasoning has been explained for seeds, so too, what is the continuity of mind? It will manifestly arise from mind. From that, fruits are born, such as mind. If it does not exist, then it will not arise either. From a mind that is associated with virtue, the continuity of mind that is its cause will manifestly arise. From the continuity of mind that is completely imbued with virtue, when cooperating conditions are near, a pleasing fruit will arise. If there is no such mind, then the continuity of mind will not arise either. Why? Because continuity arises from mind, and fruit will arise from the continuity. Action precedes the fruit. Therefore, it is neither annihilation nor permanence. If, like the final mind of an Arhat, continuity does not arise from a virtuous mind, and one continuity ceases, then it will become annihilation. Why? Because from a virtuous mind, the continuity of mind that is its cause arises, and from the continuity, a pleasing fruit arises.

Because of the transformation, it is not annihilation. If the mind does not perish until the fruit ripens, then it becomes a constant transformation. The mind, being the nature of virtuous action, arises and perishes before the fruit ripens, therefore it is not constant either. Therefore, even if one admits that action is momentary, there is no fault of permanence or annihilation. The ten paths of white action are the means of practicing Dharma, and the fruit of this Dharma in another life is the five desirable qualities. As explained above in the explanation of the divisions of action, the ten paths of virtuous action are also explained, namely the three of body and the four of speech. Not speaking, acting, and not abandoning, whatever is called non-revealing form, and so on are explained. The three of mind are explained by 'mind' and so on. Thus, those ten paths of white virtuous action, being well-restrained oneself, and benefiting others with loving-kindness, are the means or cause of practicing Dharma, which is characterized as Dharma, and the ripening fruit of that Dharma is enjoying the five desirable qualities of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch in this life (consideration) and in other lives. The second is to refute those views: In this way, when some people give answers to debates, others criticize them: If it becomes that kind of examination, many great faults will arise. If that examination, which avoids the faults of permanence and annihilation for the mind's continuum in a way that conforms to the seed's continuum and Dharma, is established, then at that time, for other schools, many great faults that contradict what is seen and unseen will arise. How is it? If it conforms to the Dharma of the seed's continuum, then just as the seed of rice only produces the continuum of the same kind, such as the sprout of rice, and does not produce different kinds, and the continuum of the sprout of rice, etc., only produces the fruit of rice, and does not produce different kinds such as the fruit of the neem tree, etc., similarly, from the virtuous mind only the continuum of the virtuous mind arises, and not different kinds of minds such as non-virtuous ones, and similarly, from the non-virtuous and neutral minds only the same kind arises.
