It is not like that. If, from the perspective of name, it precedes (things), then it would fall into the fault of being without inherent existence. Like this, isn't it the case that in most treatises, you are establishing arguments for faults? If asked this way, the scholar's treatises have great significance, and therefore, in some places, the thesis is stated directly, while the reason and example are indicated implicitly. In other places, the reason and example are stated directly, while the thesis is indicated implicitly, so in all cases, only inferences that are known to others or are self-sustaining are applied through the method of indicating the connecting words. These are the views of the scholar Legden (ལེགས་ལྡན་, lags ldan), not relying on the sequence of words, but arranged according to how things are in reality. The venerable Chandrakirti (དཔལ་ལྡན་ཟླ་བ་གྲགས་པ་, dpal ldan zla ba grags pa) holds this view: If one is a Madhyamika, then it is not appropriate to apply self-sustaining inferences, because they are meaningless and accompanied by faults. Like this, in refuting the views of others, self-sustaining inferences are meaningless. Madhyamikas refute the views of others through three methods: like this, the means of proof (sgrub byed) is not effective for the thesis to be established (bsgrub bya), and stating contradictory reductio ad absurdum arguments, and through stating reasons and examples that are known to the opponent himself and to the world in general. The first case is: if the Samkhyas assert that all things arise from the self, then the reason and example for that proof must be established for both oneself and the opponent, the Madhyamika. Because without proof, merely stating the thesis is not sufficient, and reasons and examples that are established only for oneself cannot convince the opponent, and reasons and examples that are known only to the opponent cannot establish one's own thesis. Reasons and examples that are established for both are also not to be found. Because the Madhyamika does not accept that any thing arises by its own nature, therefore, all the reasons and examples put forth to prove self-arising are not established, just like the thesis. Therefore, asserting self-arising is accepting an unreasonable position, and is merely deceiving oneself. One can refute the opponent with just this much. The second is stating contradictory reductio ad absurdum arguments: if one says that it arises from the self, then one is asserting that what already exists as its own self is the cause, and that same self arises. Just like arising from a lump of clay

The existent pot should also become a meaningless arising, because it is existent. Like an obviously clear pot. Because the refutation of the sign has been explicitly admitted, and the pervasion is established by reason, it must be admitted unwillingly. Because the existent things like the pot in front have never been seen to arise in the world. The Madhyamika must also admit that existence is pervaded by non-arising. If so, then there is a contradiction with not admitting it, if you say. If the Madhyamika does not admit even a little existence, then how can he admit that it is pervaded by non-arising? Because the arising of existence is not known in the world, saying that existence arises is merely saying that it contradicts the world. Even if the arising of existence is not known in the world, it can be established by inference, because the arising of non-existence is unreasonable, if you say. If things have self-nature arising, then because non-existence does not arise, existence must arise. Because some things do not have self-nature arising, neither existence nor non-existence arises. How can non-existence arise? Just as the horns of a rabbit, etc., would also arise. If existence arises, then things that have already arisen would also arise, so the fault is the same. There is also no fault of throwing back the refutation, because sounds are what the speaker intends to express, not independent. The Madhyamika's saying of refutation is merely intending to express what contradicts the opponent's admission or what contradicts reason, not intending to throw back the refutation. Therefore, any of the three aspects of the reductio ad absurdum stated by the Madhyamika must be admitted by the opponent, any one must be established by fame or reason, and the opponent must also abandon what contradicts fame and reason, otherwise the path of reason will be abandoned. The meaning established by fame and reason is also admitted by the Madhyamika only in front of others, not as his own view, because fame is merely a worldly term, and reason is merely the implied meaning of fame and the admission of things, and the Madhyamika does not correctly admit fame and things. Therefore, for the Madhyamika, all reductio ad absurdums without admission apply only to the opponent's admission, and saying that any of the three aspects is the measure of one's own view.
