Transform! If it is determined, then the direct perception of what is seen cannot be taken as valid cognition for the aspect of emptiness, so it must be determined only through inference. By what reason and example did you generate a valid cognition of the aspect of emptiness? Why don't you tell others that reason and example? If you don't tell because of stinginess, then you have become a non-holy person. If you say, "We have determined this aspect of emptiness from the Mahayana scriptures, but that scripture is not accepted by our own and others' schools, so we don't say it." Then, did you accept the meaning of the scripture that explains emptiness after it was established by valid cognition, or did you accept it without it being established? According to the latter case, it shows that you are foolish, because previous conceptualizations are accepted after the meaning of the scripture has been measured by valid cognition. If you say that the meaning of the scripture is accepted after it has been established by valid cognition, then why don't you show others the reason that makes the scripture of non-origination a valid cognition? No wise person would abandon the reason that enters by the power of things. If you say, "We have determined this aspect of emptiness by yogic direct perception, and that is something that each individual can realize for themselves, so we cannot show it to others." You also do not accept yogis who are causeless and self-arisen, so you must explain the means by which that emptiness yoga arises from what cause. If you say, "First, emptiness is determined through hearing and thinking, and then the meaning is practiced single-pointedly, and from that emptiness yoga arises." That is true. Even so, because cultivating a meaning that has not been established by valid cognition cannot generate true wisdom, and because the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditating that first establishes emptiness is not reasonable other than as a valid cognition of inference, why don't you show others that cause, reason, and example? Therefore, Master Buddhapālita refutes that it is unreasonable to explain the Madhyamaka treatises merely through the method of consequences. Then, what should be done? The teacher, by explaining reasons and examples, etc., for those in his own and others' schools who mainly hold to inference, dispels the error of their clinging to reality.

And eliminating erroneous discriminations is to establish the tenets of non-arising and emptiness. Because those who uphold the importance of inference, such as externalists, will not be convinced if they do not state the three-aspect reason and analogy, but only state the proposition and faults. Therefore, when refuting others, one cannot refute merely with faults, but one must eliminate erroneous discriminations by stating the reasons and analogies that the opponent acknowledges, through the inference that others acknowledge. When establishing one's own tenets, such as non-arising and emptiness, one must also apply only the autonomous reason by stating the three-aspect reason and analogy that both oneself and the opponent acknowledge. For example, in the Madhyamakahṛdaya it says: "Thus, earth and so on, in the ultimate, are not of the nature of arising, because they possess causes, etc., like consciousness." The meaning of "arising" here is that earth and so on are not arising in the ultimate. "Arising" refers to things that arise themselves or cause others to arise. Because they possess causes and are measurable, like consciousness. This is not contradictory, because it exists in the concordant class. It is not uncertain, because there is no dharma established in the ultimate, so the reason does not exist in the discordant class. It is not unestablished, because the Madhyamikas also acknowledge that earth and so on possess causes in the conventional, and the externalist schools also acknowledge it. If one thinks that possessing causes and arising are contradictory, and because it is unestablished, one doubts the elimination, then, being the same in possessing causes, it is true that earth and so on arise, but what reason is there that consciousness is not true? If one says that it is true because the arising of earth and so on is commonly known to worldly people, then this is not negating common knowledge, but negating that it is established in the ultimate as common knowledge. Therefore, there is no reason to say that earth and so on arise in the ultimate, but consciousness does not. So, either like earth and so on, consciousness will also arise because it possesses causes, or like consciousness, earth and so on are also not arising in the ultimate because they possess causes, one must acknowledge this. As it says: "The nature of space before, space is a little.
