Thus, the teacher himself understood the dependent arising as it was taught, and regarded the sole Tathagata as teaching the undeluded path to liberation. Furthermore, he understood that all the claims of other schools, such as Brahma and Ishvara, were meaningless, like the babblings of children. Here, although he saw infinite distinctions in dependent arising, he only listed eight distinctions because it is only regarding these that self and other schools and worldly people show strong attachment, and therefore they become the main points of contention. The previous negation of cessation is to show that there is no definite order of precedence between arising and cessation. As it is said: If arising comes first, and aging and death come later, then there would be arising without aging and death, and there would be arising even without dying. This will be explained in this way. How cessation and so on are absent in dependent arising is explained by all the treatises. Secondly, regarding the nature of the treatise to be entered, there are five points: briefly stating the proposition to negate arising, extensively refuting the opposing factors of non-arising, dispelling the unreasonable objections to non-arising, the nature of dependent arising as the basis of the distinction of non-arising, and explaining the benefits of understanding dependent arising. The first point is: Now the teacher wants to explain the excellent distinctions of the non-cessation of dependent arising and so on, thinking that by negating arising, it will be easy to negate cessation and so on, therefore he first composes the treatise to negate arising. Arising is also examined by others, and if one speculates that it arises from self, other, both, or no cause, then all are unreasonable. Thus: Not from self, not from other, not from both, not from no cause. In whatever place and in whatever thing, there is never any arising. As the Samkhyas say, from the self-nature of the effect, in whatever place, time, and philosophical system any internal or external thing exists, there is never any arising. Because if oneself is not established, one will not become a producer, and if one is established, there is no need to arise, therefore arising again is meaningless. Furthermore, if it arises from its own nature, it does not depend on other conditions, therefore the cause of arising will never be incomplete. Furthermore, not depending on time, there is no obstruction, therefore the arising of the same thing will be endless. Therefore,

Furthermore, in the Madhyamakavatara, it is said: 'If that arises from that, there is not the slightest essence of existence. It is also definitely not reasonable for what has already arisen to arise again.' It should be ascertained from such statements. Like the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas, it is never the case that any object arises from other causes and conditions in any place, because it is the same as that other. Even thick darkness would arise from flames, and it would follow that all effects and non-effects would arise from all causes and non-causes. As it is said: 'If one thing arises dependent on another, then thick darkness would also arise from flames, and everything would arise from everything. Why is this? Because there is no difference in the nature of being other in all that produces.' As it is said. Like the naked ascetics, it is never the case that any object arises from both self and other in any place, because it would be a fault to assert both sides. As it is said: 'It is not reasonable for it to arise from both, because the fault that has already been stated falls upon it.' As it is. Like the materialists, it is never the case that any object arises from no cause in any place, because it would follow that no object would ever become visible, like a flower in the sky, and it would follow that it would be meaningless to strive for causes such as farming and trade for the sake of results. As it is said: 'If it were to arise only from no cause, then the people of the world would not gather seeds and so on in hundreds of ways in order to achieve results.' As it is. Here, the venerable teacher Lekdenjé said: 'A mere assertion without stating the reason and example cannot establish the position of non-arising and emptiness. If one makes a rebuttal with the consequences such as everything arises from everything, then one contradicts one's own position as a Madhyamika by accepting that something arises from something, etc. If one does not make a rebuttal, then the consequence cannot be refuted, so it is not appropriate to refute it. Furthermore, do Madhyamikas themselves ascertain this position of non-arising and emptiness by means of valid cognition or not? If it is not ascertained, then it is a laughing matter for the wise to show it to others while they themselves have not ascertained it.'
