Why does it not change? Because for any dharma, in both truths, one does not cling to existence, nor slander it as non-existence, therefore it is called Madhyamaka. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Kashyapa, "Kashyapa, to say 'there is Kashyapa' is an extreme. To say 'there is not' is also an extreme. Whatever is in the middle of these two is unexaminable, invisible, and unmanifest. This is the Middle Way, the separate discernment of all dharmas." Also, as it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra, "Existence and non-existence are both extremes; purity and impurity are also extremes. Therefore, having abandoned both extremes, the wise should not abide even in the middle." Thus it is said. To speak of existence or non-existence as an extreme for any dharma does not even touch the shadow of Madhyamaka. Then, do Madhyamikas not accept conventional truth either? If so, how can they be Madhyamikas since they have fallen away from the two truths? Madhyamikas, in order to guide the world, accept conventional truth in the face of the world as it is renowned in the world, but not as their own system. As it is said in the Entering the Middle Way, "As you accept other-powered entities as real, I also do not accept conventional truth. For the sake of results, even though these do not exist, I say they do, I speak thus in the face of the world." Thus it is said. That conventional truth is also accepted in the manner of dependent arising, but not in the manner of permanence or annihilation, because dependent arising is the Middle Way that abandons permanence and annihilation. It is also said, "Whatever is dependent arising, that is said to be emptiness, that is established dependently, that itself is the Middle Way." It will be explained thus. Therefore, it is established that Madhyamikas have no position of their own system. As it is said in the Hundred Verses, "For whom there is no position of existence, non-existence, or both, for a long time, one cannot speak of faults." Thus it is said. The teacher also said in the Refutation of Disputes, "If I had any commitment, then I would have this fault. Because I have no commitment, therefore I am faultless." Thus it is said. Why is there no commitment?

If, through direct perception and the like, some object is ascertained, then one should either prove or refute it. Since there is nothing (to be ascertained), I have no fault. Thus it is said. The meaning is that if there exists some subject (dharma-possessor) established by valid cognition, then the proposition arises from proving some provable dharma or refuting some refutable dharma on top of it. If there is no subject established by valid cognition, then on what basis would one assert some special dharma? If one asks, are not unbornness and emptiness, etc., accepted by the Madhyamikas as their own tenets? The answer is that those are also accepted in the face of others in order to refute those who assert that things are truly existent with inherent existence, but they are not our own tenets. If there is no object to be refuted, such as true existence, how can one accept the refutation of that refutation? It is like not being able to cut off a rabbit's horn. Therefore, the teacher said: Since there is nothing to be refuted, I refute nothing. Thus it is said. In that case, even the self-sufficient reasoning for establishing one's own tenets is meaningless. For the Madhyamikas, not only is self-sufficient inference meaningless, but it is also faulty. Because accepting self-sufficient inference requires that all subjects, signs, and examples must be established by one's own valid cognition. According to the manner described above, since there is no subject established by one's own valid cognition, one will incur the faults of contradicting one's own assertion and the reason being unestablished. If one asks, since the Madhyamikas also accept forms and the like as conventional truths, can they be considered as subjects? The answer is that when making unbornness and emptiness, etc., the dharma to be proven, it is the time of contemplating ultimate truth. Forms and other conventional truths are merely established as existing by the inverted minds of worldly people who follow conventional terms. Therefore, they should not exist at the time of contemplating the non-inverted ultimate truth, just as the hairs and double moons that appear to those with cataracts are not visible to those without cataracts. If one asks, as it is said in the Two Truths, "Whatever aspect appears in the minds of both opponents, to that extent, relying on it, one understands the subject, dharma, etc., and then inference arises," like that, in the minds of both proponents and opponents, common
