If so, what would it transform into? Therefore, for things that lack inherent existence, there is no transformation into other states. If it is said that because the transformation itself is seen, therefore it has inherent existence, if it has inherent existence, how can it transform? If it exists without its inherent nature diminishing, just as it is now, how can it transform? Therefore, whether it has inherent existence or not, transformation is unreasonable, so transformation is impossible in every way. Therefore, one should know that all phenomena are without inherent existence. Thus, when the inherent nature of phenomena is definitely non-existent, how could a wise person conceive of phenomena as existing or not existing? If one conceives in this way, then it is certain that: grasping at 'existence' is grasping at permanence, and viewing 'non-existence' is falling into nihilism. Second, the advice not to dwell on extremes: Because clinging to the views of permanence and annihilation is also an obstacle that obstructs the path to higher realms and liberation, it causes great harm. Therefore, the wise should not dwell on existence and non-existence. Furthermore, why does clinging to things as existing or non-existing lead to views of permanence and annihilation? Whatever exists by its own nature, it is not non-existent, therefore it is permanent. Saying that something existed before but does not exist now, therefore it leads to nihilism. Whatever exists by its own nature, it is never non-existent, because inherent nature is irreversible. Therefore, if one accepts that things exist by their own nature, it will lead to the view of permanence. If one accepts the inherent nature of things in a previously existing state, and then says that it does not exist now, it will lead to the view of annihilation. According to the view of the Madhyamaka school, if things are acknowledged to be without inherent existence like illusions because they arise dependently and relationally, then it will not lead to views of permanence and annihilation, because there is no clinging to the inherent nature of things. If it is said that for those who speak of non-inherent existence, although there will be no view of permanence, why will there be no view of annihilation? For those who previously acknowledged the inherent nature of things and later say that it does not exist, because it is a denial of the previous inherent nature of things, it will lead to the view of annihilation.

If one who speaks of no self-nature does not, at any time, acknowledge even a little of the self-nature of things, then by denigrating what will he become a nihilist? In order to reverse the clinging to reality of those who have become inverted, like one who is free from cataracts saying that things are without self-nature, like the hairs seen by one with cataracts. Even so, it does not follow that it becomes a nihilistic view, because there is no object to be refuted. As it is said in the sutra: "Bhagavan, whoever first takes attachment, hatred, and delusion as real by clinging to them, and later says that attachment, hatred, and delusion are not real, that person will become a nihilist." Like that which was said. This is the end of the commentary on the fifteenth chapter of the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, called "Examination of Self-Nature." Explanation of the Sixteenth Chapter. The Sixteenth Chapter, examining bondage and liberation, has four parts: refuting samsara and nirvana, refuting bondage and liberation, showing what should be abandoned by those who desire liberation, and showing that samsara and nirvana have nothing to be abandoned or adopted. The first part has two: refuting samsara and refuting nirvana. The first also has two: the first is refuting conditioned samsara. Here it is said: The self-nature of things exists, because samsara exists. If the self-nature of things does not exist, then who goes from one realm to another and wanders in samsara? Samsara is just a name. As it is said: Although the Tathagata establishes samsara, there is no samsara there. Although the Tathagata shows nirvana, there is no nirvana there either. Thus, it is not truly existent. If samsara exists, then certainly a conditioned thing or a sentient being will change there. If conditioned things wander, then: If they are permanent, they do not wander; if they are impermanent, they do not wander either. If conditioned things wander, then what wanders? Does something permanent or impermanent wander? If those conditioned things are permanent, then they do not wander, because permanence is devoid of the activity of going and coming. Because only impermanent things like pots are perceived as having activity. If it is impermanent, it will not wander, because impermanence is destroyed as soon as it is born, so it will not wander anywhere.
