Therefore, if it is thought that only those impermanent changes of formations (Sanskrit: saṃskāra), which are causes and effects, continuously and constantly undergo changes, are what transmigrate in saṃsāra, that is also unreasonable. For the arising of the result does not involve transmigration, because it does not come from anywhere nor go anywhere. The destruction of the cause also does not involve transmigration, for the same reason as before. If it is said that when the later moment arises, the former moment transmigrates, if the former and later moments are one, then it would be so, but they are not one, because they are the entities of cause and effect, like the eye, form, and eye consciousness. If the former and later moments are different, then it is unreasonable for the former to transmigrate when the latter arises, because ordinary beings are born in saṃsāra, then arhats would also transmigrate, and it would also become that when another lamp is lit, the extinguished lamp is also burning. Therefore, it is unreasonable to think that there is a continuous transmigration, so there is no transmigration for impermanent formations. Second, the refutation of the transmigration of the person (Sanskrit: pudgala): Here, some of those who belong to the maternal and filial schools believe that there is a person other than the aggregates, elements, and sense bases who transmigrates and attains liberation, which contradicts reason. So, if it is thought that it is not the formations that transmigrate, but the self that transmigrates, then this reasoning also applies to sentient beings. If it is thought that sentient beings transmigrate, then analyze whether it is the permanent or impermanent that transmigrates. The reasoning that it is unreasonable for formations to transmigrate also applies to those who believe that sentient beings transmigrate, therefore sentient beings also do not transmigrate. If it is thought that the way it is unreasonable for formations to transmigrate does not apply to sentient beings, because unlike formations, the self does not become permanent or impermanent, but the self cannot be said to be the same as or different from the aggregates, just as it cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent. If it is thought that the person transmigrates, then for the aggregates, sense bases, and elements, if one searches for it in five ways, and if it is not found, then what transmigrates? If it is said in the Essence of the Middle Way that the person does not truly transmigrate or attain liberation, because it is imputed, like a house. Because it is expressed, like a house. Because it is expressed, like a smell. Like roots and trees.

Just as a house is designated based on materials like earth, reeds, and bricks, similarly, a person is merely designated based on the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. Because those (aggregates, elements, and sense bases) do not exist, and because it is something that can be spoken of, there is no bondage or liberation. If one asserts that an inexpressible person transmigrates in samsara, that is also unreasonable. If some person exists who transmigrates in samsara, that does not exist, because when that person is sought in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases in five ways, it is not found. How so? Just as: Wood itself is not fire, and fire is not other than wood. Fire is not connected with wood. There is no wood in fire; it is not there. The nature of fire and wood, and all the order of taking. Just like that, the self is not the nature of the aggregates, etc., nor is it different from them, nor is it connected with them. The self does not have aggregates, etc., and there is no self in the aggregates, etc. Like that, when sought in five ways as previously explained, if the self does not exist, then which non-existent self will transmigrate in samsara? Therefore, there is also no samsara for the self, because it is non-existent like the son of a barren woman. Furthermore, if this self transmigrates, from taking to taking, if it transmigrates, then there will be no existence. If there is no existence, no taking, then what will transmigrate? Here, if one goes and transmigrates from the taking of a human to the taking of a god, then does one go having abandoned the taking of the human, or does one go without having abandoned it? If it is the former, because the previous taking has been abandoned, and the later has not been taken, then in between those, that self will have no existence, i.e., no five aggregates of taking, because there is no existence, and the self has no taking, that is because it is separated from the cause of taking that is designated as the self. That self separated from the cause, what is it? It is nothing at all, and it does not exist, so what will transmigrate? It will not transmigrate anywhere. If one says that one has not abandoned the previous one, that is also unreasonable, because if one has not abandoned the previous one, and one has taken the later one, one self will become two selves, because one does not want that to exist. If one says that between the previous and later existences, there are the aggregates of the intermediate state, so there is no fault of there being no existence, then
