Because there is the fault of contradiction. However, if they are different, then meeting is also unreasonable, because even the single eye that is separate from form, etc., would have the fault of meeting. Therefore, since there is no meeting, there is no seeing, etc., this conclusion is established. If it is said that even without meeting, there is the act of meeting, the event of meeting, and the agent of meeting, because these are not prohibited. Even without meeting, these are not non-existent, therefore there is also meeting, if you say: The act of meeting and the event of meeting, The agent of meeting is also non-existent. At the time when it is shown that there is no meeting, the present act of meeting, which is the proof of meeting, and the event of meeting, which expresses the action of meeting, and the agent of meeting, who independently abides in the completion of the action, are also non-existent. Therefore, the Bhagavan said: The eye, if it possesses all, will see, But what is it that the eye sees forms? At night, if form, sky, light, and the conditions of attention are absent, it will not see. Therefore, possession and separation are conceptualizations. The eye, relying on the condition of light, Sees various forms, both pleasing and displeasing. Thus, when seeing relies on possessing conditions, Therefore, the eye never sees. Etc., as it is said. Commentary on the fourteenth chapter, "Examination of Meeting," from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. Explanation of Chapter Fifteen Chapter Fifteen, Examining Intrinsic Nature, has two parts: refuting the grasping of existence and non-existence, and advising not to dwell on extremes. The first part has three sections: refutation by reasoning, refutation by scripture, and showing other ways of refutation. The first of these has three parts: refuting self-entity, refuting other-entity, and showing that ultimately the nature itself is not seen. The first of these has two parts. The first is the refutation of self-entity: Here it is said that sprouts, actions, and other things exist by their own nature, because they take the causes and conditions that produce them, such as seeds and ignorance, as their proximate causes. If it is said: Intrinsic nature from causes and conditions, Is not reasonable to arise. If actions, sprouts, and so on exist by their own nature, then it is not reasonable for them to arise from causes and conditions, because they exist by their own nature. For what is already established

Like sprouts and so on. If from anything, cause and effect become meaningless, before arising, no thing whatsoever has self-nature. However, the self-nature that was not previously existent, only depending on cause and effect, arises later, if that is the case, then: What arises from causes and conditions, Self-nature becomes something made. If it is thought that self-nature becoming something made is merely your wish, then: Self-nature called something made, How can it be established? That which is made and that which is self-nature, these two are mutually contradictory. For example, whatever thing is made by conditions, that is not called self-nature in the world, like the heat of water. Whatever is self-nature is not made by conditions, like the heat of fire. Saying that heat is the self-nature of fire is merely an example of worldly convention. In reality, heat is not the self-nature of fire either, because it arises from the conditions of rubbing wood and so on, like the heat of water. If the heat of fire and so on is not self-nature, then what is their self-nature? And what is their characteristic? Self-nature is truly unconditioned, Not dependent on others. The self-nature of things like fire is unchanging in the three times, the inherent essence that is unconditioned, not dependent on other causes and conditions. If it is said like that, does such a self-nature exist? It is neither self-nature existing nor non-existing, but in order to dispel the fear of the listeners, it is said to exist conventionally. As the Blessed One said: In the dharma without letters, Who is the listener, who is the speaker? From imputation there are no letters, That is both listening and speaking. If it is spoken from imputation, then what is its self-nature like? The dharmata of all dharmas, that is, suchness, from the beginning is without arising, free from the darkness of ignorance, the noble ones see it in a way that is not seeing, that itself is unconditioned, and because it does not depend on others, it is said to be the self-nature of things like fire. Second, refuting other-entity.
