To view emptiness in this way is not correct. Why is that? Manjushri, emptiness arises from all views. Manjushri, if someone only clings to emptiness, I say that is incurable. Manjushri, consider this: for example, there is a sick person, and the doctor gives him medicine, and the medicine can drive away all diseases, but if the medicine stays in the stomach and does not digest, Manjushri, what do you think? Can that person be freed from the disease? He replied: World Honored One, he cannot be freed. If the medicine can drive away all diseases, but the medicine stays in the stomach and does not digest, that person will get a very serious disease. Manjushri, emptiness arises from all views. Manjushri, if someone only clings to emptiness, I say that is incurable. It is like this saying. In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it also says: Even if one hears the view of emptiness, If some people's views are not eliminated, This incurable view holder, Is like a patient abandoned by a doctor. It is said like this. The commentary on the thirteenth chapter, "Examination of Activities," of Nagarjuna's Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way is completed. Explanation of Chapter Fourteen. In the fourteenth chapter, "Examination of Combination," there are two parts: extensively showing refutation and the conclusion of refutation. The first part has two parts: directly refuting combination and incidentally refuting other meanings. The first part has two parts: stating the proposition and explaining the reason. The first part is: Here it is said that things exist by their own nature because their combination is shown. For things that do not exist, there is no combination, just like the son and daughter of a barren woman. The consciousness of the eye arises in dependence on the eye and form, etc., because combination is shown, therefore things exist. If it is said like this, then it is shown that the eye, etc., individually or collectively, do not combine with the object. The eye does not see the eye, and the mind does not see the mind, because it is contradictory to act on oneself. Because it does not see itself, how can it see other things like a pot? It simply cannot see. If the eye had the power to see, then in states such as sleep, intoxication, and death, and also in dark places and at all times, it should be able to see everything.

If one cannot see, then it cannot be considered to have the ability to see, which is established as a measure. If it is said that it is seen by consciousness, then it would follow that even a blind person could see forms. If it is said that it is seen by the eye with consciousness, then this is what everyone accepts in conventional truth, because their seeing also depends on the collection of form, space, light, and attention. If these are analyzed, since they have no inherent nature, there is no contact. Here it is said that the Samkhyas believe that the five senses other than the mind perceive by contacting their objects. The Sautrantikas say that the eye, ear, and mind perceive without contacting their objects, because the eye and ear can perceive forms and sounds from a great distance, and the mind can perceive past, future, distant, and near objects without obstruction. The nose, tongue, and body are not like that, because they only perceive objects that they contact. To refute these views, as it is said in the Madhyamakahṛdayakārikā: The nose and so on do not desire contact with objects, because they manifestly grasp external objects, and do not grasp the past and future, like the eye sense. The nature of the eye, ear, and mind is to grasp without contacting objects. And so on. The object to be seen, the seeing, and the seer, these three, both two by two, and all together, cannot be in contact with each other. The object to be seen, form, the seeing, the eye, and the seer, the eye consciousness, these three, whether it is the eye and form, or the eye and consciousness, or the consciousness and form, such two by two, cannot be in contact with each other. All three together cannot be in contact with each other. Similarly, desire, attachment, and the object of attachment, the remaining afflictions, and the remaining aggregates, are also in three ways (not in contact). Just as the object to be seen, the seeing, and the seer cannot be in contact, so too, desire and attachment, and the object of attachment, the remaining afflictions such as hatred, the hater, and the object of hatred, and so on, and the remaining aggregates, such as hearing, the hearer, and the object to be heard, and so on, are also two by two and all together
