Does it become the nature of conditioned or unconditioned phenomena? If birth is conditioned, then it will possess three characteristics. If one considers birth to be conditioned, then it will also possess three characteristics such as birth, because these three, such as birth, are unmistakable for all conditioned phenomena. Therefore, like form and so on, birth becomes the subject of proof, but not the nature of conditioned phenomena. If birth is unconditioned, how can it be the nature of conditioned phenomena? If one considers birth to be unconditioned, because it is devoid of the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena, how can it be the nature of conditioned phenomena? Just as a cow is not the nature of a horse. If one considers these, such as birth, to be conditioned, then is it each individually or a collection that is considered the nature? Each of birth and so on, to be the nature of conditioned phenomena, is not possible, because if at the time of birth, there is no abiding and cessation, then, like space, birth separate from them is not reasonable as the nature of conditioned phenomena. If in the power of abiding there is no birth and cessation, then because of being separate from them, abiding also does not exist, like a flower in the sky. Similarly, if at the time of cessation there is no abiding and birth, then because of being separate from them, cessation also does not exist. Therefore, it is not reasonable for the three to be the nature individually. The collection of the three is also not suitable as the nature, because how is it possible for all three to be collected in one thing at one time? Like light and darkness, because they are mutually contradictory. If birth and so on have three characteristics, then what fault is there? If it is unconditioned, then what fault is there? For birth and abiding and cessation, if there is another nature of conditioned phenomena, if it exists, it will become endless, if it does not exist, then they are not conditioned phenomena. If one thinks that birth and abiding and cessation have other conditioned characteristics such as birth, then they also have other characteristics, therefore it will become endless, and in that case, because the ultimate limit of the characteristics cannot be known, it is impossible for birth and so on to be established.

If arising and so on do not have characteristics, they would become non-conditioned phenomena, and thus it would not be appropriate as the characteristic of conditioned phenomena. Second, individually refuting, there are three refutations: arising, abiding, and ceasing. First, stating the previous position: Here, those who are respected by many say that even though arising and so on have other arisings and so on, it will not become endless, because the fundamental characteristics and the corresponding characteristics accomplish each other. Thus, when a virtuous or afflictive dharma arises, it and fifteen others arise: the dharma itself, having arising, abiding, aging, impermanence, and if it is afflictive, then wrong liberation, and if it is virtuous, then correct liberation, and if it is definitely arising, then its definite arising, and if it is definitely not arising, then its definite non-arising, these are the cycle. Among them, the seven from the arising of arising to the non-definite arising of non-definite arising are the cycle of the cycle. Among them, the fundamental arising causes the arising of arising, and the arising of arising causes the fundamental arising. The fundamental arising causes the dharma itself and the six fundamental characteristics, the six corresponding characteristics, and the arising of arising, while the arising of arising only causes the fundamental arising. Similarly, non-definite arising does not cause the fourteen dharmas to definitely arise, and the non-definite arising of non-definite arising only causes non-definite arising to definitely not arise. Therefore, it will not become endless. This is what they say. Second, refuting it, there are two parts: the actual refutation and combining what has been said with remembrance. First, there are three parts: refuting that arising is caused by another, refuting that arising is caused by itself, and showing another way of refuting. First: If, according to you, the arising of arising causes the fundamental arising, then that which was not caused by your fundamental
