The all-discriminating consciousness of earth also cannot be established when analyzed as the same or different from its own cause. Just as this reasoning is stated when refuting the views of others, it is also the same when making explanations, it is said. When explained by emptiness, whoever raises objections, all those objections are not objections, but become the same as what is to be proven. When emptiness is explained, if someone like a student says that form exists because feeling and others exist, etc., all those objections are not truly objections, but are the same as what needs to be proven, just like before. The Madhyamikas say that when one dharma is said to be empty, everything is the same as that, so no one can answer or refute it. As it is said in the Sutra of the Treasury of Space: "By one dharma, all dharmas are known to be like illusions and like cataracts, not to be grasped, without accumulation, false and impermanent. If one thus realizes, one will soon go to the essence of enlightenment." Thus it is said. The commentary on the fourth chapter, the Analysis of the Aggregates, from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, is completed. Explanation of Chapter Five. The fifth chapter is the Analysis of the Elements. The first of the two, the former position and its refutation, is that the elements exist, because the Bhagavan said, "Great King, this person is of six elements." Therefore, if it is extracted from the scriptures, then just like the elements, the aggregates and sources also exist. The second is to refute that, to extensively refute the six elements, and to show that one is not liberated by clinging, in two parts. The first part is the refutation of the element of space, and the comparison of that method to others, in two parts. The first part is the extensive explanation of the refutation, and the conclusion of the refutation, in two parts. The first part is the refutation of the name and the named, and the refutation of existence and non-existence, in two parts. The first part has three parts. The refutation of the definition is: the six elements are earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness. Here, explaining from the perspective of refuting the substantial existence of space: Before the definition of space, there is no space at all. If it precedes the name, then it would be without definition. Here, space

A characteristic is that it is without obscuration, and if prior to that there is a basis, space, then it is reasonable for the characteristic to be applied to it. However, prior to the characteristic of space being without obscuration, there is not even a little bit of space as a basis. If the basis were established before the characteristic, then it would follow that there would be no characteristic. This is neither desirable nor reasonable, because: Things without characteristics, Do not exist anywhere. If it is said that there is a characteristic, because the characteristic is applied to it, then: In a non-thing without a characteristic, Where will the characteristic be applied? Because it has already been said that prior to the characteristic, there is no basis-thing without a characteristic, where will the characteristic be applied? Therefore, the characteristic is not applied. If it is thought that the basis is established first, and then the characteristic is applied later, then the same fault of having no characteristic will occur. Secondly, if it is said that they are established simultaneously, then just like the left and right horns, because they do not depend on each other, the characteristic and the signified cannot be established. Furthermore, when a characteristic is applied, is it applied to something with a characteristic or something without a characteristic? Neither is reasonable, because: For something without a characteristic, a characteristic, Is not applied, nor is it applied to something with a characteristic. For something without a characteristic, a characteristic is not applied, like the horns of a rabbit. For something with a characteristic, a characteristic is also not applied, because applying a characteristic to something that is already established as having a characteristic is meaningless. If it is applied, it will become endless. If it is applied to something other than these two, then: Other than something with a characteristic and something without a characteristic, It will not be applied to anything else. Because something that is neither with a characteristic nor without a characteristic does not exist. Secondly, refuting the basis: If it is thought that even if a characteristic is not applied, the basis exists, then: If a characteristic is not applied, The basis will not be established. When, as said above, the characteristic is not applied in that way, the basis will not be established, because the basis depends on the application of the characteristic. If it is said that even if a characteristic is not applied, the characteristic exists, and because of its existence, the basis also exists, then: If the basis is not established, The characteristic will also not exist. When the characteristic is not applied,
