If it is said that because there are four (phenomena) from taking birth to old age and death, therefore (these phenomena) exist. Then, how would taking birth, etc., exist? When there is no object to be seen and no seer, since there are no four (phenomena) such as consciousness, then at that time, how would their fruits, the four (phenomena) such as taking birth, exist? They simply do not exist. Second, extending this reasoning to other senses: compare seeing to hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and mind. It should be understood that the hearer and what is heard, etc., should also be explained in this way. The nature of hearing itself is not hearing to itself. If one does not even listen to oneself, how would one listen to others? To thoroughly prove hearing, the example of fire is not effective. By obstructing what has gone and what has not gone, this is the answer to having hearing. Like this, all of these should be connected to the mind and explained. If the senses such as the eye are not truly objects of forms, etc., then the Bhagavan has also said: The eye does not see forms, the mind does not know dharmas, where there is no world, this is the highest truth. Etc. This is the commentary on the third chapter, "Examination of the Senses," from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. Explanation of Chapter Four Fourth, in the chapter on examining the skandhas, there are two parts: stating the initial position and refuting it. First: If the senses exist, because there are five skandhas, and the senses are also included within them. If this is said, then refuting it is divided into: refuting the form skandha, and extending this reasoning to other skandhas. First: refuting the general case of cause and effect of form, specifically refuting the cause of form, summarizing the meaning of the refutation, and showing other ways of refutation, four in total. First: Without the cause of form, form will not become an object. Without what is called form, the cause of form will not appear either. The cause of form is the elements such as earth, because they are the cause of producing the fruit form. Form is the fruit form, namely the five objects and the five senses. Without the cause of form, namely the elements such as earth, the fruit form will not become an object separately. Without the fruit form, namely form, sound, etc.

Furthermore, the causes of form that arise are also not visible. Why is that? If there is no cause of form apart from form, then there would be no cause, and there is nothing that exists without a cause. Just as cloth, which is different from a pot, is not the cause of it, so if there is a form of a result that is different from the arising of the cause of form, then that form of the result would become causeless. Because it is different from the arising, it does not depend on it, and because there is no other cause. There is nothing that exists without a cause, because it would either become permanent or never exist at all. Therefore, we do not accept a form that is separate from the cause of that form. There is also no arising of the cause of form that is separate from the form of the result. If there is a cause of form apart from form, then it would become a cause without a result, and there is no cause without a result. If there is an arising of the cause of form that is different from the form of the result, then just as a pot that is different from cloth is not the cause of cloth, so the cause of form that is different from the form of the result is not its cause, so the arising of the cause of form becomes a cause without a result. Since the cause to which the term 'cause' applies depends on the result, there is no cause without a result. Secondly, if these elements such as earth are considered to be the cause of the form of the result, then is the form of the result considered to be existent or non-existent? Neither is reasonable. If form exists, then the cause of form is not reasonable. If form does not exist, then the cause of form is not reasonable. If the form of the result exists, then the arising of the cause of form is not reasonable as a producer, because there is no need since it already exists. If the form of the result does not exist, then the cause of form is not reasonable as a producer, because it cannot accomplish what does not exist. If that is the case, even though there is no cause of form, is there a form of the result? Forms without a cause are neither reasonable nor unreasonable. How the cause of form has been explained is finished.
