Therefore, the statement "this arises from that" is not reasonable. Because all things arise dependently, they are without inherent existence like illusions. The existence of things without inherent existence is also not truly existent for any reason. Therefore, the statement "because this cause exists, this effect arises" is not reasonable as the very definition of a self-cause. Therefore, even from the definition, a true cause cannot be established. Third, if it is argued that because the production of cloth etc. from cotton etc. is observed, these are the causes of it, then the observation of the production of cloth etc. from cotton etc. is a conventional truth established by conceptual thought, but it is not an ultimate truth. Because: In the separate or assembled causes, that effect is non-existent. If that is not in the causes, how does it arise from the causes? The effect, cloth, is non-existent in any of the causes such as cotton and good thread, whether they are separate or assembled, because it is not seen. And if it existed, then the effort made by the weaver to produce cloth from those causes would be meaningless. How can the cloth, which is not in the causes such as cotton, arise from those causes? If you ask why it does not arise, if the effect does not exist, but it can arise from those causes, then why does the effect, cloth, not arise from non-causes of cloth such as thatch? Because the absence of cloth is the same in both cases. Second, refuting that the effect is the nature of the cause: If cause and effect are different entities, then it would be reasonable to consider whether the effect exists in the causes or not. If it is argued that the effect is not a different entity from the cause, but is the very nature of the cause, that is also unreasonable. If the effect is the nature of the cause, then the causes are not the nature of the self. How can the effect produced from something that is not the self be the nature of the cause? If it is asserted that the effect, cloth, is the nature or essence of the causes, cotton etc., then in the causes such as cotton,

Nor are they existent. For if one analyzes the individual parts of these, no intrinsic nature is found. Therefore, the effect is not a real self, because the causes from which the self's nature is not established—how could the effect, such as cloth, become the nature of causes like cotton? Because the causes themselves have no intrinsic nature. The effect is not the nature of the cause, that is what is said. But if the effect becomes the nature of non-causes? The effect of non-cause nature is non-existent. When cloth is not the nature of cotton, the effect of the nature of reeds, etc., which are non-causes of itself, the cloth is non-existent, because it is contradictory. If it is said that because there is a distinction between cause and non-cause, the effect also exists, then, because there is no effect, how could non-cause become a cause? If the effect exists, it will be said that this is the cause of this, and this is the non-cause of this. But as mentioned before, because there is no effect, how could there be a distinction between non-cause and cause? Therefore, things themselves do not have self-nature birth. As it is also said in the Sutra of the Noble Jewel Source: Where there is no wisdom of emptiness, it is like the path of birds in the sky. Whatever has no intrinsic nature, that will never be the cause of another. Whatever whose intrinsic nature cannot be found, being without intrinsic nature, how can it be a condition for another? What can that which is without intrinsic nature produce? The Thus-Gone One has taught this cause. Thus it is said. Commentary on the first chapter of the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way, Examination of Conditions.
