It becomes a condition, because non-existence cannot be produced by a condition, like a rabbit's horn. If the result already exists, what is the use of a condition? Because it has already obtained birth, like a sprout that has already grown. Second, refuting the characteristics individually, there are four. First, refuting the characteristic of the cause condition: In the Abhidharma it is said, "That which accomplishes is the cause," that which is produced by what, abiding in the nature of a seed, that is said to be the characteristic of the cause condition. If you say that because the characteristic exists, the cause condition also exists, then that characteristic is also conventional, not ultimately true, like this: When a dharma exists, non-existence and existence-non-existence are not accomplished. How can it be called an accomplishing cause? If that is so, it is not reasonable. If some dharmas are accomplished from a cause, even if the accomplishing one can be considered a cause condition, it is not accomplished. Because when a dharma exists, it is not accomplished, because it is already accomplished. Non-existence is not accomplished, because it cannot be produced. Both existence and non-existence are not accomplished, because they are mutually contradictory and because it becomes a fault of stating both sides. Thus, if no dharma can be accomplished, how can it be said that the cause condition is what accomplishes the result? Therefore, if you say that because the characteristic exists, the cause condition exists, it is not reasonable. Second, refuting the objective condition: Here, what are the dharmas that have an object? All the dharmas of mind and mental factors. As it says in the scripture: Like an old man rising by leaning on a cane, the mind and mental factors that are arising rely on forms and other objects to arise, those are its objective conditions. If you say that, that is also not correct. This existing dharma is the object, only showing that it is non-existent. If a dharma has no object, how can there be an object? If you contemplate whether this objective condition exists or does not exist, contemplating an objective condition for the mind and mental factors that existed before the object is meaningless, because it has already been established before that, even though its own nature has no object. Therefore, for the dharmas of mind and mental factors that existed previously, which are clearly without an object, you arbitrarily show that they have an object.

It is only that. There is no object connection to this at all. If one thinks of the non-existent as an object, then if there is no object for a non-existent dharma, how can its object exist? Therefore, the definition of the objective condition is also conventional, not real. Third, the refutation of the definition of immediate condition: Furthermore, if the cause ceases immediately and becomes the condition for the production of the effect, then this assumption that the similar is the definition of the immediate condition is also unreasonable. If the dharmas are not produced, then cessation is not reasonable. Therefore, the immediate is not reasonable. If it ceases, then what is the condition? This is only said because of the combination. The explanation is: If it ceases, then what is the condition? Therefore, the immediate is not reasonable. This is explained by reversing the order of the text. In this regard, if the dharmas of the effect, such as sprouts, are not produced, then the cessation of the cause, such as seeds, is not reasonable, because the condition for the cessation of the cause is the production of the effect. If it is assumed that the seed ceases and disappears without the effect being produced, then what is the condition for the production of the sprout? What is the condition for the cessation of the seed? Because the production of a sprout without a seed is unreasonable, and the cessation of a seed without the production of a sprout is also unreasonable. If the effect has already been produced, then the condition has no function. Therefore, the definition of the immediate condition that the cause ceases immediately and becomes the condition for the production of the effect is unreasonable. Alternatively, because production is prohibited in "not from oneself," etc., if the dharmas are not produced, then cessation is not reasonable, because cessation depends on prior production. Therefore, the immediate condition that the cause ceases immediately and becomes the condition for the production of the effect is unreasonable. Furthermore, if it ceases, then what is the condition? It is like a crow that does not make a sound after it has died. Alternatively, the previous explanation can be applied. Fourth, the refutation of the definition of the dominant condition: Here, if it is assumed that "because this exists, this arises, this is its dominant condition," this is the definition of the dominant condition. This is also conventional, not real. For things that are empty of inherent existence, how can existence be non-existence? This exis-
