Firstly, from a seed sprouts a seedling, and from that comes a trunk, leaves, flowers, and fruits, etc., arising in sequence. Secondly, from the condition of ignorance arise actions, and from the condition of birth arise aging and death. Therefore, to explain the detailed classification of the branches of dependent origination, which are the main parts within, it is said: "Obscured by ignorance, for the sake of rebirth, the three kinds of actions, by those actions, one goes to the realms." A person obscured and covered by ignorance, which is characterized by attachment to things as they appear, performs three kinds of actions—meritorious, non-meritorious, and unwavering—for the sake of bringing about rebirth. By those actions, one will transmigrate in the cycle of the five realms. Thereafter, "Action-conditioned consciousness turns, in all sentient beings, entering into all destinies." The consciousness of a person who has performed and accumulated the three kinds of actions, conditioned by action, becomes a seed that is not for the sake of cyclic existence. In accordance with the action, it will enter and be born in the various realms such as the gods. At that time, "When consciousness has entered the womb, name and form are established." When consciousness, conditioned by action, enters the mother's womb and becomes unconscious, the aggregates of name and form, which are in the form of color and color-shadow, will be formed when the aggregates of the final death cease and become the share of birth. Among them, the four non-form aggregates such as consciousness are called 'name' because they are stained by karma and afflictions and are focused on that particular place of birth, or they are called 'name' because they tend to go to the meanings by the power of name. The colored senses in the state of tenderness are called 'form' because they can be harmed. Therefore, in this way, "When name and form are established, the six sense bases arise." When name and form are formed in the womb, they gradually grow and become the gate for the arising of suffering. The six sense bases, such as the eye, arise conditioned by name and form. Thus, after the six sense bases have arisen, at that time, the six sense bases

Depending on this, contact will arise correctly. What is contact, and how will it arise? Only by relying on the eye, form, and mindfulness will it arise. Thus, depending on name and form, consciousness will arise. The combination of eye, form, and consciousness, what is that? That is contact. The self-cause is the eye, the object-cause is the form, and the immediately preceding cause is mindfulness. Only eye consciousness arises depending on attention. Among these, mindfulness is name, which has the nature of the four aggregates, and the sources of eye and form are form. Thus, depending on the three causes that have the nature of name and form, eye consciousness will arise. The three, eye, form, and consciousness, when they meet and gather together, that is called contact. Some Abhidharma scholars consider the mere meeting of object, sense faculty, and consciousness as contact. Others consider it to be the mental factor that completely cuts off the characteristics of pleasure and pain of the object. Here, the former is taken. Then, in the future, from that contact, feelings will arise universally. From the contact that has the characteristic of the gathering of object, sense faculty, and consciousness, feelings of experiencing pleasant, unpleasant, and the opposite of both, namely pleasure, pain, and equanimity, will universally arise. Then, in the future, craving arises from the condition of feeling. Because of feeling, craving will universally arise. Why? Because craving is for the sake of feeling. Craving arises for the sake of feeling. Thus, if a pleasant feeling arises, one desires to obtain it; if suffering arises, one desires to be separated from it; and if equanimity arises, craving arises in order not to lose it. If there is craving, then there is grasping. The four types of grasping will arise. Thus, if there is attachment and craving for feeling, then the four types of grasping that arise from craving as a condition, namely desire-grasping, view-grasping, ethics and discipline-grasping, and self-assertion-grasping, will be completely held and grasped, which is conditioned by craving.
