I am not making a determination, but rather saying that wisdom must be focused on emptiness, and because it is the nature of non-arising, it is the very essence of being beyond all elaboration. If you say that the fault I mentioned is the same for you, who consider nirvana to be of a nature that is separate from elaboration, then we do not accept any dharma called "true nirvana," and therefore we do not consider there to be any attainers of it. Merely in name, nirvana, as realized by the pure worldly wisdom of subsequent attainment, which is guided by the power of meditative equipoise, is separate from all elaboration and is peaceful, so there is no fault in my determining it thus. Fourth, refuting the clinging to extremes regarding the Tathagata: Just as these four discriminations about nirvana are unreasonable, so too are these discriminations impossible for the Tathagata who has realized nirvana. After the Blessed One has passed into nirvana, it does not appear as existent, similarly, it does not appear as non-existent, or both, or neither. When the Blessed One has passed into nirvana, no extreme appears, whether it is "existent," "non-existent," "both," or "neither," because He is free from all elaboration. Not only does the Blessed One not appear in the four extremes after passing into nirvana, but even when the Blessed One is dwelling, it does not appear as existent, similarly, it does not appear as non-existent, or both, or neither. Just as it does not appear, it was previously said when examining the Tathagata: "Not the aggregates, nor other than the aggregates; Because he has no aggregates, he does not exist therein; The Tathagata is not possessed of aggregates; What, then, is the Tathagata?" Fifth, showing the equality of samsara and nirvana, divided into two parts: the actual meaning and the refutation of other clinging views. The first part is: Between samsara and nirvana, There is not the slightest difference. Between nirvana and samsara, There is not the slightest difference. Because when the Blessed One dwells, it does not appear as existent, and so forth, and when he passes into nirvana, it does not appear as existent, and so forth, for that very reason, there is not the slightest difference between samsara and nirvana, and there is not the slightest difference between nirvana and samsara.

Because their nature is the same. Moreover, the Bhagavan has said, "Monks, the cycle of birth and death has no beginning and no end." This is also valid because there is no difference between samsara and nirvana. Like this: Whatever is the end of nirvana, that is the end of samsara. Between these two, there is not even the slightest difference. As previously stated, whatever is the absence of the four extremes of the prior and later ends of nirvana, that is also the absence of the four extremes of the prior and later ends of samsara. These two, samsara and nirvana, are merely labeled as different by conceptual thought, but in their own nature, there is not even the slightest or most subtle difference. Secondly: Views that cling to the extremes, such as whether the Tathagata exists after passing away, and views of permanence, etc., rely on nirvana, the future extreme, and the past extreme. Because there is no difference between nirvana and samsara, not only is there no clinging to the prior and later extremes, but also the four possibilities—whether the Tathagata exists or does not exist after passing away, whether both exist or neither exist—rely on the extreme of nirvana. The four possibilities—whether the world has an end, etc., or does not have an end, whether both have an end or neither have an end—rely on the future extreme. The four possibilities—whether the world is permanent, etc., or impermanent, whether both are permanent or neither are permanent—rely on the past extreme. These views do not exist because the nature of both samsara and nirvana is the same, a single taste of peace, free from the four extremes. The first four are called relying on nirvana because they involve a strong attachment to nirvana. The second four are called relying on the future extreme because they involve seeing or not seeing future birth of self and world, seeing the arising of nature and the reversal of circumstances, and clinging to the future end of birth by preventing these. The third four are called relying on the past extreme because they involve seeing or not seeing the past birth of self and world, and like before, seeing or not seeing, and clinging to the past part of birth by preventing these. These views
