The pure and stainless grounds, in the Buddha-ground, the appearances of the realm of pith instructions vanish, and they abide solely in the Dharmakaya, the self-aware and self-illuminating wisdom of non-duality. All classifications of body and wisdom are considered merely conventional designations, in accordance with the clinging of those to be tamed. Most of the great chariots of the Madhyamaka school, such as those teachers and Chandrakirti, agree with this view. What exactly is the definition of the alaya-vijnana? And what do the two views, that the alaya exists or does not exist, actually mean? Chandrakirti and other Madhyamikas consider the alaya to be provisional. Their intention is emptiness or merely the clarity and awareness of wisdom. The necessity for this is to correct the heretical view of self. If, according to the literal meaning, there exists the alaya, which is the basis of all afflictions, then it is no different from believing that Ishvara is the creator. Even without the alaya, the classification of karma and its results is established as it appears in conventional reality, and there is no contradiction. The brothers Asanga, through many scriptures and reasonings, establish that the alaya is ultimate. If you want to understand the true definition of the alaya according to their system, please refer to my commentary on the Abhidharmasamuccaya, where there is a detailed explanation. Here, I have only mentioned it briefly, and this is not the complete Buddhist terminology for understanding. Which is more reasonable: to directly introduce the clear awareness as the self-born wisdom of the Dharmakaya, or to consider awareness incompatible with the Dharmakaya? The former view is more in line with the Vijnanavada school. It seems that most of the accomplished masters of both China and Tibet hold this view. If one has sharp faculties, one becomes a Yogachara-Madhyamika; if one is of middling capacity, one becomes a Vijnanavadin; and if one is inferior, there is a danger of falling into the Samkhya system, because they believe that liberation is achieved by recognizing the awareness of the self. Are all appearances mind? Do Madhyamikas accept that the appearances of mind are mind? The Yogachara-Madhyamikas believe that, in ultimate conventional reality, appearances are the essence of mind. The Sautrantikas and Prasangikas believe that, conventionally, the appearances of the five senses are external objects. If analyzed with intelligence, the mind is illusory.

Therefore, it is neither mind nor other than mind. It is held that the endless cycle of existence is in accordance with the Mind-Only school, and the finite is in accordance with the Madhyamaka school. Which statement is more reasonable? Both Madhyamaka and Mind-Only do not accept that the general cycle of existence has an end. Both Madhyamaka and Mind-Only accept that there is an end for those who have entered the path. In the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, it is said that the final teaching is definitive and the intermediate teaching is provisional. What is the basis for this? Nowadays, it seems that the final teaching is identified with sūtras such as the *Nirvana Sūtra*. However, this is not the view of the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*. The final teaching refers to the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* itself. It is said in India that there was a large version of the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* with one hundred thousand verses, but it has been lost. In China, there are twelve chapters, one chapter with eight sections, one with five sections, and one with three sections. It is said in the commentary on the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* that there are four translations of the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*. In Tibet, there are two three-section chapters translated from India and China. Therefore, the final teaching that is definitively taught in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* refers to the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* itself. The brothers Asaṅga consider this to be definitive, and their treatises also explain the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* literally, ultimately establishing the Three Vehicles and proving the reality of other-powered consciousness (paratantra-vijñāna-mātra), while the intermediate teachings are explained as provisional teachings with hidden meanings. If Nāgārjuna and his son consider the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* to be literally definitive, then the reality of other-powered consciousness must be established, and it would ultimately become the Three Vehicles. However, since these views are harmed by definitive sūtras such as the *Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra*, they explain it as provisional. The basis for believing in the existence of other-powered consciousness is that, conventionally, the mind is considered the agent of inner and outer phenomena. The necessity is to gradually lead some beings who are frightened by emptiness into the correct meaning, as stated in the *Madhyamakāvatāra*: "The ālaya-vijñāna exists, and there is a person, and these aggregates alone exist." This is said because it is for those who do not accord with the most profound meaning. The harm to reality is that, for the view that the ālaya-vijñāna and other other-powered phenomena are established as real, the reasoning that proves their lack of inherent existence, such as separation from one and many, causes harm. There, the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas have ultimate nirvāṇa.
