Therefore, these teachings are beautiful because they demonstrate the union of conventional and ultimate truths in an indivisible manner. The definitive meaning of 'line' is: If someone asks, what is the line drawn by the thread of the essence of the nine scriptures? The answer is: 'Wisdom is this line, method is its follower.' This means that wisdom is the luminosity of the ultimate truth, and method is the conventional truth that follows the ultimate truth, and these two are inseparable, this is the line drawn by the thread of the nine branches of scripture. The definitive meaning of 'mandala' is: Such a line, what kind of mandala does it indicate? The answer is: 'With a line of wisdom and method, draw the line of the mandala of the heart.' This means that with a single line inseparable from wisdom, the ultimate truth, and method, the conventional truth, draw the line of the mandala of the heart, that is, indicate the mandala of the heart. What is the nature of the mandala of the heart? 'Dharma and enjoyment are perfectly supreme.' This means the Dharmakaya, the Sambhogakaya, and the Nirmanakaya, the union of these three bodies inseparable, the great Vajradhara, because he receives or holds the essence of the two truths inseparable, is called the mandala of the heart. Indicated by the line of the two truths: 'The cubit should be measured as twelve.' And so on, the explanation of the meaning of the mandala is: 'The twelve links of dependent origination, the four noble truths are the four faces, the four brahmaviharas are the four corners, the four means of gathering are the doors, and each has four names. The nature of dharma is the symbol of meaning, it is the mandala within the wheel.' This means that the body of union is purified of the twelve links of dependent origination such as ignorance, therefore it is twelve cubits. Because it understands the four noble truths such as suffering, it is four-faced. Because the four brahmaviharas such as loving-kindness treat all beings equally, it is four-cornered. Because the four means of gathering such as generosity lead and place beings in the city of great liberation, it is four-doored. To symbolize the non-dual wisdom of the suchness of all dharmas merging into one essence, therefore the inner mandala is circular. The arrangement of mudras and the definitive meaning
