Because everything arises from it. The true nature of sound is equal to space, because all the sounds of language arise from Āli Kālī. The letters of Āli Kālī are rooted in the short A, and the short A arises from the clear light of the empty space within the body. Therefore, all sounds are rooted in emptiness, so they are equal to space. There are two benefits of knowing the true nature of sound: obtaining forbearance of the unborn dharma, and overcoming the eight worldly dharmas. Obtaining forbearance of the unborn dharma means that the yogi who understands that all sounds are unborn can endure all seemingly contradictory things, because all appearances are emptiness, and can also endure all persons. Why? Because a person is emptiness, and emptiness appears as a person. Overcoming the eight worldly dharmas means that understanding that all sounds are unborn, one will not have likes or dislikes for praise or blame, etc., because he has realized that praise and blame, etc., are like echoes in a valley. Therefore, through hearing and contemplation, cut off attachment to wind, mantra, and the true nature of sound, and realize that the true nature of sound is equal to space. Then, combine the true nature of wind, that is, arising, dissolving, and abiding, with the true nature of mantra, that is, letters, seed syllables, and the three inseparable, and practice in the manner of counting recitations. First, practice with the coarse material wind, then practice with the subtle material wind, and then practice with the clear wind that is mixed with awareness, according to the instructions. The measure of perfecting the vajra recitation is: First, the measure of being skilled in the coarse material wind is that the movement of the wind is clear and one's own elements are harmonized. The measure of being skilled in the subtle material wind is that the touch is comfortable and one can move the wind from left to right. The measure of being skilled in the clear wind mixed with awareness is that one can control the wind harmlessly and can mix the wind with the inside and outside. In this way, one obtains complete control over the wind. The benefits of perfection are: once spontaneous accomplishment is attained, one can accomplish the pure speech of the Tathagata, one can overcome the eight worldly dharmas, subduing the wind will cause the mind to arise in solitude, and learning.

Through reliance on the body of union, activities such as pacification are accomplished. Thus, having explained the preliminaries to mind isolation, which are body isolation and speech isolation, now we will explain the nature of mind isolation itself. This has two aspects: the general meaning and the branch meanings. The first of these also has the supporting individual, the knowable, what is to be abandoned, the characteristics of the individual divisions, and the explanation of the terms. The supporting individual for mind isolation is someone who desires the samadhi of mind-only after the vajra recitation has been perfected. As it is said: 'Having recited the vajra, the yogi will attain focus on the mind.' The knowable of mind isolation is that all phenomena are the aspect of the mind's self-awareness, great bliss, and that this mind arises from emptiness and dissolves into emptiness, knowing it to be like space. As it is said: 'The vajra of the heart, complete enlightenment, the vajra of abiding, if analyzed, is called the vajra of the heart.' What is to be abandoned is the eighty natures encompassed by the conceptualization of grasping and being grasped. The characteristics of the individual divisions are two: the characteristic of the knowable mind and the characteristic of the wisdom that focuses on the mind. The characteristic of the knowable mind is twofold: the non-conceptual, all-appearing mind and the conceptual, self-nature-appearing mind. The masters have different opinions regarding the identification of these two. According to the tradition of Nagpopa, the father and son (Asanga and Vasubandhu) of the noble ones consider the mind stream to be one. In the Compendium of Practice, it says: 'It goes alone and wanders far, without a body, it dwells in the cave of the senses.' And, 'The mind sense is three appearances.' So, how are the six or eight consciousnesses established? By distinguishing them by location and support, they become the six collections of consciousness. For example, just as when a lamp is placed in a house with six holes, the appearance of six lamps arises, so too, the mind of enlightenment, Samantabhadra, experiencing mere awareness, relies on the five senses, such as the eye, and the appearances of the five objects, such as forms, arise, and thus it is established as the five sense consciousnesses. That same awareness, relying on the previous consciousness, understands conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, and thus it is mind consciousness. Grasping at 'I' and 'mine,' thus it is afflicted.
