Considering the thusness of the defiled object of purification, the self-luminous nature of the mind, the Buddhas turn the wheel of Dharma in order to purify the mind streams of sentient beings that are defiled. Here, others do not distinguish between the thusness of the defiled object of purification and the way the Vajra body of the result of purification pervades, and they confuse the two, believing that the ground and the result are inseparable, permanent, and one. This is a great mistake. Because if it is permanent, then it cannot be defiled by sudden adventitious stains, nor can the path make the defiled stainless. Because permanence is unchanging. Therefore, it is also said in the commentary: When refuting the views of others who assert a permanent self, it says: Here, whatever is permanent has no other state, because it is devoid of change. Moreover, the noble Deva also said: Harmlessness and the permanent self, what reason is there for this? In all circumstances, a Vajra cannot be protected by a worm in wood. Therefore, it is said that permanence cannot be harmed or benefited by conditions. Second, the categories of names are: the cause of the lineage, the innate nature, the self-luminous nature, the Tathagatagarbha, the nature of the lineage, the realm of sentient beings, the Dharmadhatu, the Vajra of the mind, the thusness with defilements, and so on. Through many categories of names, it is explained in the sutras, tantras, and treatises. Third, there are two ways in which it is naturally pure: it does not change into good or bad due to conditions, and its own essence is not born as the nature of defilement. The first is: For example, the rays of the sun pervade good things such as jewels and bad things such as impure things, but they do not change into good or bad due to these conditions. Similarly, the cause of the lineage, the Bodhicitta Samantabhadra, also exists in the birthplace of good beings such as gods and bad beings such as dogs. However, it does not change into good or bad due to these conditions, because it is naturally pure like the rays of the sun. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Bhadrakara:

It is said in the Sutra Pitaka: For example, the light of the sun falls on foul odors, impure things, and corpses, but the light of the sun is not tainted by the odor, and the sun does not leave because of the odor and go elsewhere. Similarly, this realm of consciousness, even if it takes birth in places like dung heaps and the birthplaces of dogs and pigs that eat filth, the realm of consciousness is not tainted by these bad behaviors. So it is said. Second, it is not born as the nature of defilement: For example, gold, even when it is in a state of being combined with rust, is not the nature of rust; water, even when it is in a state of being combined with turbidity, is not the nature of turbidity. Similarly, the mind of self-luminous nature, even when it is in a state of being combined with defilements, is not the nature of afflictions and conceptual thoughts. Otherwise, it would not be possible to purify afflictions and conceptual thoughts with antidotes, or, when defilements are removed, the self-luminous mind would also be cut off. Therefore, because it is not born from sudden defilements, the mind is naturally pure, just like water and gold, it is born from its own immediate cause as a pure nature, that is its meaning. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: The nature of the mind is luminous, it is immutable like the sky, attachment, etc., arising from unreal thoughts, do not defile it with sudden defilements. So it is said. Fourth, the way in which defilements are adventitious: For example, even though gold and rust are formed together, gold is born from its own immediate cause as a pure nature, while rust is born from causes other than the cause of gold, so it can be separated from the nature of gold and is adventitious; even though water and turbidity are formed together, water is born from its own immediate cause as a very clear nature, while turbidity is born from causes other than the immediate cause of water, such as dust, so it can be separated from the nature of water and is adventitious. Similarly, the self-luminous mind and defilements such as attachment, etc., although they have been formed together since beginningless time, the self-luminous nature arises from the immediate cause of its own previous similar kind.
