Diligence gives birth (to merit), the power of wisdom increases (merit), wishes in accordance with the Dharma are fulfilled, one understands the meaning of all scriptures, one progresses gradually on the bhumis and paths, and ultimately it is said that one attains perfect enlightenment. This little song on how to accumulate merit was spoken by the monk Ra Ga A Sya when it arose in his meditative experience on the third day of the waxing moon of the victorious month in the Horse year (Tibetan calendar). Titled "Skillful Means," it was written in a memorandum of forgotten things. May all who connect with it complete the accumulation of merit! Chapter Eleven, auspicious and complete! Na! (135) From the Mountain Dharma: Instructions for Retreat, this is the Dharma called The Guru Yoga: A Rain of Blessings. Namo Mahamudra Ye! Guru Tsondu Gyatso, please listen! Because you are the root of faith and devotion in practice. Although it is important to practice Guru Yoga, one must recognize the object of prayer—the Guru. Therefore, one must understand the classification of Gurus. The Guru for taking the hair-cutting vow of a layperson is: if there are no other monks in that area, then a layperson or a novice monk can also do. The Khenpo for ordaining a fully ordained monk must possess any one of the twenty-one qualities. Even if he does not possess them, the vows can arise, but the giver will commit a transgression. The receiver must also be free from obstacles. Even if someone with obstacles takes the vows, the vows can arise, but that is also called a transgression. If one desires to be liberated from samsara, but does not have a good mind of renunciation, then the Pratimoksha vows cannot arise in full measure. Even if the Guru who gives the Pratimoksha vows is good, he is only the Sangha Jewel, and it is not said that he is a Buddha. The Guru for taking the Bodhicitta vows of the Mahayana is: he must possess the vows of Bodhicitta, and even a householder can give them. No matter how good the Sutra Guru is, he is only a spiritual friend or a Bodhisattva. One should have the perception of a father towards the Khenpo of the Pratimoksha vows, the perception of a doctor towards the Sutra Guru, and the perception of a patient towards oneself. For the Guru who gives the Secret Mantra, one should regard him as actually being the Yidam deity. Regarding this, in many empowerment rituals of Indian treatises, it is said: Do not regard the Guru and the Yidam deity as different, I will definitely bestow this supreme accomplishment upon you. Therefore, if one thinks that the Guru and the Yidam are different, it is difficult to attain accomplishment.

That lama from whom you receive secret mantra instructions, it doesn't matter whether they are a Buddha or a sentient being (137). If you genuinely have faith in your own Yidam, the accomplishment of that Yidam will swiftly arise. That is the upward measurement of faith, reverence, and respect. Even if doing so doesn't benefit the lama, it is the key to accomplishing the self-arisen deity. Therefore, when the yogi Milarepa was asked, "Whose emanation are you?" he replied, "Whose emanation I am, even I myself do not know. It could even be an emanation of the three lower realms. Meditate on Vajradhara and pray, and you will receive the blessings of Vajradhara." Understand the meaning of those words. Those are the lamas from whom you request empowerment. Regarding the lama from whom you request Mahamudra, it was not said that just anyone is sufficient. If there is no consort, the samaya is not valid, so it is said that it is important for the lama to possess realization. If you cannot find a lama who possesses realization, after merely receiving the transmission of instructions, take whichever Kagyu lama you have faith in, such as Düsum Khyenpa of the Kadam lineage (138), Götsangpa, etc., as your root lama and pray to them. The arising of realization of Mahamudra is the promise of the Kagyu forefathers. This is great compassion for the followers. Whichever Kagyu lama you prefer, when you take them as your root lama and pray to them, it is good to visualize that lama's form directly. Otherwise, for a lama who possesses both faults and qualities, if you visualize their actual form, both faults and qualities will enter. To ensure that qualities enter and faults do not, visualize the essence of the lama as the form of a deity. This is the method for those who have not yet generated realization to generate it, the method for those who have generated it to increase it and reach the end, the method for clearing away all obstacles and deviations, the method for blessing the three doors of body, speech, and mind, the method for accomplishing whatever is desired without obstacles, and the method for protecting the Dharma protectors and guardians of the lineage (139). Lama Yoga is the only supreme method, and within it are the four: outer, inner, secret, and most secret. In the outer Lama Yoga, there are also the three: stacked platforms, market gatherings, and mass assemblies. Whether you are a Yidam deity or an ordinary being, on the crown of your head, on a lion throne, lotus, and moon seat, visualize the root lama as Vajradhara. On the crown of that lama, the lineage lamas are strung together like pearls.
