Bawa said: Thus, to purify, one needs the essential instructions on confession. Confession is done through the four powers of the essential instructions. The power of reliance is the blessings of the Three Jewels. The antidote mandala is in the presence of the Lama. If not, then in the presence of the invited Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The power of regret is to generate remorse for sins and downfalls, like swallowing a potent poison. The power of antidote application is knowing all virtuous deeds such as prostrations and circumambulations. The most supreme is the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva. The power of restraint is to firmly take a vow not to commit sins and downfalls from now on. The key point is that regarding the sins and downfalls committed in the past, the arrogance of thinking 'I can overcome them,' boasting to others, and having no shame, even if one confesses, it will not become pure. Even if one commits sins and downfalls, thinking it is okay to confess without fault, if one does not restrain and guard oneself from now on, then (118) even if one confesses, it will not become pure. The secret mantra of confession is the hundred-syllable mantra. By reciting twenty-one times in each session, whatever sins and downfalls one has committed will not increase. All the scholars and accomplished ones of Tibet and China agree on this. Even if one recites it only once, all sins and downfalls will be purified, as stated in the Tantra of the Play of the Supreme Horse. The measure of the number is one hundred thousand times. In the degenerate age, it is said that it is necessary to recite four times that amount. Therefore, without mixing speech with others, reciting four hundred thousand times will restore even the broken root vows. The Nyingma and Sarma schools agree on this. If it is difficult to read the hundred-syllable mantra correctly, then the six-syllable mantra, which is the essence of the root, is the same even if recited one hundred and sixty thousand times. Those who have broken the root vows in this life will be born in the northeast direction below the Avici hell. In the Sutras, it is called the hell of Shambhala. (119) In the Tantras, it is called the Vajra Hell. The suffering is seven times greater than the eighteen hells, the suffering is intense, and there is no interruption. The Bhagavan could not bear to speak of the suffering and the measure of the lifespan there. If he spoke of it, all compassionate Bodhisattvas would vomit blood and die. Even the defilements and obscurations of breaking vows that arise there can be purified by clearly visualizing the generation stage of Vajrasattva's meditation and recitation, and the six-syllable heart mantra.
