The custom. Receiving the three vows in sequence and protecting them separately. When one is able to work with the root energies, even if relying on the path of desire, the Pratimoksha vow will not be lost. When liberating beings in ten realms with fierce mantras and evil forces, the Bhikshu vow will not be lost. This also means that the three vows transform in their dwelling place and are of one essence. For example, like the twenty-five disciples of Orgyen (Padmasambhava), even when engaging in union and liberation, they still wear their Dharma robes. This is the custom of the Nyingma tradition. In the impure Early Translation Nyingma teachings, after receiving the empowerments of the nine vehicles, including the Sutra empowerment, even if one claims to have received all three vows, without requesting other Vinaya vows, one wears Dharma robes and patchwork robes, carefully guarding the vows. This is a prophecy of the great Orgyen (Padmasambhava), considering the vows to be obtained from the empowerment, and it is said to be a sign of the decline of the Vinaya teachings. There is not much fault in this, but guarding the Vinaya without requesting the Vinaya will have great benefits and drawbacks. This arose from the eastern border of Dokham (present-day Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan). Jowo Je (Atisha) and Panchen Shakya Shri (Shakya Shri Bhadra), all the completely pure wise and accomplished ones, said that the three vows should be received in sequence, and each of their protections should be guarded. The root of everything is the Pratimoksha vow, which is like a water vessel without cracks. Filling it with water is like the Bodhisattva vow. The appearance of the moon's reflection on it (77) is like the Mantra vow. When the vessel is broken and the water leaks, the moon's reflection disappears. Similarly, when the Pratimoksha vow is lost, both the Bodhisattva vow and the Mantra vow disappear. Therefore, one must be careful to guard the Pratimoksha vow, which is the view of Jampel Yang (Manjushri) in person, Tsongkhapa. Therefore, the Gelug tradition has monks who uphold the Vinaya. Panchen Shakya Shri (Shakya Shri Bhadra)'s disciple Panchen, named Vidhuti Chandra, in his "Radiant Light of the Three Vows," quotes Indian texts: The Pratimoksha is like a star, the Bodhisattva vow is like the moon, and the Mantra vow is like the sun, each existing separately in one person's continuum. Even if one is lost, the others will not be lost, and even if there is a fault of loss, one cannot fall into the lower realms because the lower one is lost. For example, when the moon and stars disappear, if the sun is present, darkness cannot harm. Therefore, if possible, one must guard everything, and if not, one should mainly guard the upper Mantra vow.
