In retreat, anytime. Take breaks on the 8th and 23rd of each month. On the 8th, this is the oath of Dzambhala (God of Wealth). The Torma of Surupa, and one hundred and eight abbreviated Tormas, should be prepared early in the morning, without fail. In the evening, make offerings to the Dharma protectors, and if you cannot do the extensive practice of Chöd, then do the Tsok of Kusuli. The self-generation of the root deity, as well as recitation and Torma offerings, should not be interrupted. The practice of the generation stage of the New School, and the practice of the Maha Yoga of the Old School, should be combined with the essence of practice. At auspicious times such as accomplishment practices, extensively perform the fulfillment offerings of the Dharma protectors, as well as fire pujas of pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, and subduing. In this way, the generation stage will increase. Constantly meditate on the body mandala of the deity, and perform fire pujas in food and drink. Visualize the in and out breaths, abiding in the three places, and focus on reciting the three-syllable Vajra mantra. When free, do the Trulkhor of holding the breath (579). When not free, visualize all movements of the body as Trulkhor dances and mudras. This is the complete body mandala of the New School, and the Anu Yoga of the Old School. It is best to practice the union of the generation and completion stages, and even if you cannot, strive to protect the essence. Repeatedly and clearly remember. The practice of Mahamudra Trekchö is fully complete. By looking at Bindu and Tögal, the essence of the nine Ati vehicles is fully complete. All these virtuous deeds should be sealed with the three excellences. In this way, the roots of virtue will not diminish but increase. This distinction of practice is made by the encouragement of the Ocean of Diligence. Without following the explanations of the scriptures, it is only my own experience of practice. Thinking that it might benefit others who are as inferior as myself, therefore, in the evening of the 18th and 19th of April in the Wood Snake year (1965), what was said by Raga Asya was written down by Guru Birya (580). I hope that those who see this high view will look upon it with compassion. I hope that those who are proficient in rhetoric will laugh at it. I hope that those who are as ignorant as I am will practice it. May it benefit even a few of the most inferior people. Chapter 39 is auspiciously completed. Thum! From the oral instructions of the mountain retreat Dharma, the ocean of activities for the benefit of beings is completed. Homage to Guru Lokeshvara! O lively and diligent ocean! There are two ways to benefit beings.

Da. Shakyamuni's teachings have two aspects: scriptural and experiential. The scriptural teaching is upheld through explanation. People with wisdom and diligence rely on many Geshes and scholars. They are not ignorant of all fields of knowledge and are proficient in grammar, logic, Abhidharma, as well as the treatises of Madhyamaka, Prajnaparamita, and Vinaya. They are skilled in combining words, extrapolating, and explaining. Even without experience (581) and realization, they know in detail the stages of the path from the initial entry into the Dharma to the attainment of complete and perfect Buddhahood. They receive titles such as Kachen and Lharampa. They also teach their students in this way. Many Geshes emerge from among the students. This is the monastic tradition of the great monasteries. Regarding this point, Milarepa said: In the lands of U-Tsang and the four Rus, practice is not prevalent, but explanation is. As he said, such people are highly regarded. They do not desire experience and realization in this life. As a result of upholding pure morality, they obtain a human body in every lifetime, and through good habits, they become scholars. After countless such rebirths, they desire to realize emptiness. They receive vast empowerments and transmissions that are in accordance with this, and they understand their meaning. Even if they have not generated experience and realization, they can transmit the empowerment lineage and the teaching lineage to others. For example, like a deaf person playing a conch shell, even if they do not understand the meaning themselves, they may benefit those who have karmic connections. At that time, it is the teaching of scripture. Now, the teachings of Shakyamuni are also such that after the teaching of realization has faded, the time for the teaching of scripture has arrived. Therefore, being able to transmit only the lineage of explanation and the lineage of scripture is to be a holder of the scriptural teaching. Even if experience and realization do not arise in the students, if they have wisdom, the scriptural lineage will flourish. The ignorant also obtain the merit of hearing, which is a beneficial activity that is appropriate for the time. The teaching of realization is upheld through practice. The Kagyu and Nyingma schools are primarily the teachings of the practice lineage. The way of benefiting beings in the practice lineage is that with focused, high or low realization, when explaining guidance and so on to others, it does not benefit others and is harmful to oneself. Therefore, now is the time to strive for practice. It is beneficial to explain in detail and carefully with experience and realization that is free from elaboration, high or low, but it is slightly harmful to oneself. With the yoga of realizing one taste, because the time for benefiting beings has arrived, without effort (583), enjoyment falls like rain. Others listen with respect to whatever is said, transforming the minds of others.
