Therefore, this is not a treatise on poetry, so I have avoided elaborate embellishments of words. This is not an explanation of scriptures, so I have avoided elaborate debates between my own and others' systems. This is not a treatise intended to show off knowledge, so I have avoided collecting and copying many documents. This is not a repetition of others' words, so I have avoided quoting the teachings of great accomplished masters of the past. Because it is not the self-created nonsense of a fool, it does not contradict the teachings of the sutras and tantras of the past. Because I have frankly spoken of my own experiences, I hope it will be of some benefit to a few who are like me. Therefore, Lama Viryasagara wrote it on the side of a lamp in the cold. May the virtue cause all who see it to perfect their experience and realization! Chapter Thirty-seven, auspicious and complete! From the oral instructions of the mountain retreat Dharma, the great peacock that subdues poison, the method of abandoning, subduing, transforming, understanding the nature of the five poisons that turn away from the Dharma, and taking them as the path, is present. ། །Namo Shakyamuniye! The perfectly enlightened Buddha who knows all aspects, I prostrate to the Buddha who truthfully spoke the truth. Lama Karma Tsondru Gyatso said: Alas, no matter what I do, I cannot liberate these five poisons into emptiness, In order not to be controlled by these five poisons, Please have compassion and grant profound instructions. In response to his request, I say this: Abandoning the five poisons, subduing them with antidotes, understanding their nature, and taking them as the path, there are four methods. First, the meaning of the Four Noble Truths, the wheel of Dharma. Because I deeply believe in the infallibility of cause and effect, I remember the faults and abandon them. In this life and in future lives, Unwanted suffering will come. The cause of suffering is non-virtue, Whatever sins are committed by the instigation of the five poisons, These are non-virtuous, so they must be abandoned. Because suffering will certainly arise from non-virtue, That suffering will be experienced by the truly existent body. This is called the truth of suffering. All non-virtue arises from the five poisons, This is called the truth of origin. If the five poisons are stopped, the grounds and paths of liberation will be attained. This is called the truth of cessation. By traversing the grounds and paths, the fruit of Arhatship will be attained. This is called the truth of the path. The meaning of turning the wheel of Dharma in Varanasi is

All are gathered at that root. It is said that the fruit of attachment is to be born as a hungry ghost. Hatred is the cause of hell, and ignorance is the cause of animals. Jealousy is the cause of Asuras, and pride is the cause of gods and humans. In the three lower realms, suffering is unbearable. Although there is temporary happiness in the heavenly realms, impermanence quickly turns into a cause of suffering. There is no end to birth, aging, sickness, and death. The root of that is the five poisons (537), so they must be abandoned. Even if you can endure the thoughts of the five poisons now, you cannot endure the suffering of the evil realms of samsara. Therefore, even if the five poisons arise, endure and wait. Like the strict orders of a powerful king. The King of Dharma, Shakyamuni Buddha, if one violates the precepts he has established, there will be punishment of experiencing the suffering of the evil realms for hundreds of thousands of kalpas. In this world, although there are many deaths, breaking the precepts is a hundred times more painful than that. One who keeps the precepts, even if he dies, is not truly dead, because he can immediately obtain a good body. To be attached to a beautiful form and abandon vows is like a moth being attached to a lamp, like a moth flying into a fire. To be attached to the happiness of intense afflictions is like laying dry grass on a great fire, thinking the bed is comfortable and falling asleep. Breaking the precepts of food such as meat, alcohol, onions, and garlic, (538) is like licking honey on the tip of a razor. No matter how one conquers worldly enemies, one can only take away the life and enjoyment of this life, but cannot take away the happiness of many lifetimes. The merit accumulated in hundreds of kalpas, all the merit and virtuous deeds will be destroyed by a single act of anger. Therefore, it is very important to abandon this enemy. A bee, because of its attachment to honey, sticks to the honey and dies. Similarly, if one is attached to the happiness of this life, if one is attached to samsara because of attachment, there is no time for liberation. Therefore, one should have few desires and be content. The sleep of ignorance is the robber of virtue, even if one lives to be a hundred years old, one sleeps like a corpse for fifty years. It is said that there are twenty faults of sleep. Therefore, one should sleep lightly and strive for virtue. Because one does not understand oneself, the power of ignorance is strong, speaking of what is not Dharma as Dharma, and slandering the Dharma as not Dharma, like sentencing without food, which is meaningless.
