Dapa Shor! Thinking, "I wonder when I became distracted," I then traced back its path. After that, I didn't want to endure the discomfort of my mind. From the moment I recalled that power, All the discursive thoughts that arose during the previous distractions, Were like drawing them in my mind and looking outward, By looking at their essence, they would dissolve into emptiness. It is said that this satisfies the mind and is effective. Regarding this, the unequaled Dagpo Lhaje said: "If you realize the essence, even when slightly distracted, Those discursive thoughts cannot obscure it." Such a state of having no distraction at all, Will not come until you have practiced and realized it. This is clearly explained in Marpa's instruction on the inseparability of wind and mind. Nowadays, most of those who claim to be without distraction, Seem to be merely in a state of slight distraction within a blissful experience. Thus, the reason why genuine non-distraction (530) does not arise is: Because the mind is not resting in equanimity, Therefore, it is said to be a dharma not mixed with Buddhahood. Distraction and non-distraction, mindfulness and non-mindfulness, Sleep and non-sleep, are essentially no different, Because the essence is emptiness, the naked Dharmakaya. Non-mindfulness and distraction do not become worse, Mindfulness and meditation do not become better, Like the unchanging gold of Salepram. This realization is the realization of essence, Merely having some understanding of it and becoming self-assured, If you abandon virtuous actions, it will turn into the work of demons. Even if you gain the confidence that there is no difference between distraction and non-distraction, You should repeatedly and deeply remind yourself with mindfulness. Before Dagpo met Milarepa, He mistakenly thought that meditation was futile. This is also clarified in Pagdru's answer to a question. The instructions and lamas have said this. By aligning it with my own experience, I found peace of mind. At that time, the great power of the union of Shamatha and Vipassana arose. (531) Some people experience bliss, and their body and mind increase with pleasure, There is certainty in their mind, and great joy. Similarly, the mind arises in a clear and empty, naked state, Clear, naked, filled with certainty and confidence. Most of the time, they go into that state during sleep. Experiencing such realization, they think that others do not have it, Becoming arrogant, they boast themselves as the most supreme realized ones. Both of these are experiences, and if you do not refute them and practice, It is like mistaking brass for gold. What is the method to refute these two experiences? It is to refute that firm certainty. That certainty is discursive thought, Discursive thought is the cause of ignorance and samsara.

It is the great non-conceptual wisdom. Therefore, regarding the words of the Kagyu forefathers, there are many who practice but few who can analyze. Saying this is also that intention. So, what is that practice like? Is it the awakening of karmic residues from previous lives (532), or the result of accumulating merit and purifying obscurations, or the blessing entering through the power of devotion, or the accomplishment from the deity practice dissolving, whatever it is, it is uncertain, and naturally ecstatic. Past good realizations emerge like shedding a shell. All certainties are destroyed from the root. There is no clinging to what is to be meditated upon or the meditator. Like the ordinary mind before hearing the Dharma, one simultaneously realizes the Mahamudra, and thinks, "Ah, ah, it is this." The lama didn't say it, he deceived me. I didn't realize it myself, it was all in vain. Now there is nothing to meditate on, so sitting silently is enough. Thinking like this, the mind becomes like resting. This is called ordinary naked awareness, and that which is untouched by the minds of the three great ones, unspeakable, unthinkable, free from elaboration, all are names for it. Without distraction (533), from the repeated reminders of the mindfulness guardian, non-action is the practice. If one has little learning, one will not be satisfied with this. One wants clear, empty, naked, and blissful experiences. Because one cannot reach that level as before, one thinks that the practice has gone astray and becomes unhappy. That is realization falling into experience. To enhance it, one should guard it itself, and abandon the desire for good experiences and realizations. Then one can avoid going astray. There is no change in its essence, only in whether clarity arises or not. This was said on the eleventh and twelfth of the first month of the Wood Snake year (Tibetan calendar), during a meditation break, at the request of Lama Tsondu Gyatso, Ra Ga A Sya spoke whatever came to mind immediately without thinking, therefore the order is confused. I confess this fault to the knowledgeable ones. Even if the order is confused here, the order is clear in the instruction manuals, (534) that is done according to the gradual path. For those who practice Tögal, the order is not fixed, so even if the order is confused, there is not much fault. Because this is not a Dharma discourse, the chapter order, quotations, and elaborations are omitted.
