Constantly remembering that death comes quickly, If you understand that practicing realization is more important than anything in this life, It is a sign of meditating on death and impermanence. Keep vows and samayas well, At all times in hearing, thinking, and meditating, If you feel that there is nothing more important than practicing Dharma, It is a sign of meditating on the difficulty of obtaining leisure and opportunity. Even if a powerful person does unavoidable sins, (468) Even if a rich person gives great rewards, Even if you have to do unavoidable things that concern yourself, If you don't give up the four root downfalls, It is a sign of meditating on the cause and effect of taking and abandoning. Everything you have done has not become the right path, Even though you have given your mind to the Dharma, You are still tormented by non-virtue, misfortune, disease, evil spirits, and enemies, But you do not have wrong views about the Three Jewels and deities, Whatever you do, you still trust in them, It is a sign of meditating on taking refuge. If you have not committed even a speck of sin, Even if people speak ill of you, offer great bribes, or threaten your life, But one day you will also be placed in the state of Buddhahood, Even if you want to completely destroy lifetimes after lifetimes, You will not tell anyone such evil thoughts, It is a sign of meditating on Bodhicitta. Actually, the mind is happy, the body and mind are clear, and the senses are clear, In a dream, you take a bath and impure things come out of your body, You drink nectar and milk (469) and fly in the sky, It is a sign of meditating on Vajrasattva and reciting mantras. If you have not practiced any realization and virtuous deeds, If you dream of flying, you will become weaker and weaker. Actually, even if you don't eat, you don't feel hungry, The body is beautiful, the mind is happy, and you feel bliss, In a dream, you dream of auspiciousness, find precious treasures, You dream of wearing beautiful clothes, it is a sign of mandala. Actually, devotion and longing arise involuntarily, You call the Guru's name and shout loudly, When you pray, tears flow involuntarily, You see the Guru in a dream and receive empowerment, He removes obstacles, increases merit, and prophesies good and bad, You dream that you are the Guru himself, You know that the essence is inseparable and you abide in it, It is a sign of meditating on Guru Yoga. The eight consciousnesses are not clear, as if you are sleeping, You lose mindfulness and stay in a stupor for a long time, It is a sign of arising dullness (470) in Shamatha. You block thoughts and do not remember anything, You live in a stupor and pretend to be meditating, It is the view of the Chinese Heshang.

Signs of arising. Like gaining freedom of one's own mind, no matter what the object, it is not distracted and remains for a long time. This is a sign of the arising of common calm abiding. When one's own mind is left uncorrected and relaxed, it does not become distracted and remains for a long time. This is a sign of the arising of qualified calm abiding. When one looks at its essence while abiding, one abides for a long time in the state of seeing emptiness. This is a sign of realizing the union of calm abiding and insight. The place of arising, going, and dwelling of the mind, its color and shape, are examined separately, but none are found. This is a sign of the arising of common insight. Whatever realization arises, one looks nakedly at its essence. If one sees oneself as peaceful, like water and waves, this is a sign of the arising of moving insight. Like threading a needle, without distraction, (471) one looks at whatever arises as the essence of abiding and moving. One also knows the pursuit of abiding and moving. This is a sign of knowing. From then on, without needing such effort, one arrives immediately upon remembrance. This is a sign of having ease in cultivating practice. Desires for food, clothing, speech, etc., become small. One does not want to learn many qualities of Dharma. One understands that practice and faith are the essence. One realizes that all worldly activities are unnecessary. This is a sign of a new meditator not desiring gold, and finding the experience of bliss. One realizes that all dharmas are empty. One speaks loudly of emptiness, but does not fear the results of karma. This is a sign of the arising of a bewildered view of emptiness. One has certainty and no doubt about one's own practice. One does not please anyone and suppresses them with arrogance. This is a sign of the arising of clear and stable experience. Although one has meditated for a long time, one's mind stream is coarser than before. Stinginess and jealousy are greater than before. (472) One calls others meditators and mocks them. This is a sign of the arising of a great coarse experience when an old meditator picks up shoelaces. Like smoke before a great fire blazes, if one does not lose that power and can maintain its essence, this is a sign of the rapid arising of great power. All previous experiences are shed like skin. The experience of the mind cannot be expressed in words. All certainty and pride disappear like a rainbow. This is a sign of realizing the essence of one's own mind. There are no experiences or dreams, not even pure appearances. Renunciation, sorrow, and faith burn ever more strongly. Without obstacles, one's life is spent
