It is not established in the past. If it were, there would need to be a trace of uninterrupted activity in this past thought, but that is not established. It is not established in the future. If it were, it would have to come like a great market, or walking on a bridge, or monks proceeding in a line. But that is not the case. Looking at the present, its essence is not established anywhere. This is the very first awareness that has never moved or erred. Both of these are the very mind of mind itself, the very nature of reality of reality itself. The mind that the teacher is to point out is also this. What the student is to understand is also this. Other than that, there is nothing to be shown or seen that has characteristics. However, what we, with our eyes like water bubbles and minds of discrimination, have not seen cannot be taken as a standard (370). It must be seen by those who possess the eye of Buddha's wisdom. As stated in the Sutra Requested by Light-Protected One: "Light-Protected One, the mind is not white, not yellow, not like the color of cinnabar or crystal. Light-Protected One, the mind is not past, not future, not present. The mind is not seen, is not being seen, and will not be seen by all the Buddhas of the three times." This means that the mind is not seen as something with characteristics. This is called emptiness, the nature of mind. As the Great Brahmin said: "From the nature of space, which is pure from the beginning, looking and looking, seeing will cease." This is not emptiness or non-existence, but the radiance that never ceases, shining brightly. This is called the characteristic of clear mind (371). As Shavari said: "Not annihilation, but like waves." Therefore, waves exist like a stream of mind-water. If you think that it is different, it is not. The nature is emptiness, and its characteristic shines without cessation. That is the very existence of nature emptiness. That is called the essence of union mind. As stated in the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra: "Mind is not mind; the nature of mind is luminosity." Therefore, the mind that is free from identification is called non-conceptual wisdom in Dharma language, or ordinary awareness in vulgar language. As Niguma said: "Do not pay attention, free from all hope and fear." This is the key to meeting thoughts. The Great Brahmin said: "This Dharmakaya of ordinary awareness, free from identification, comes from the great instructions of the teacher."
