Having settled down and stayed without mental fabrication, did the mind grasp the vase? Did the vase in turn grasp the mind? Or do they exist separately? Is the mind itself the vase? Look to see if it appears as your own mind. Upon looking, they are indistinguishable. As it says in the Tikle: "Mind-essence is co-emergent," etc. Mind-essence is the Dharmakaya, the Dharmakaya of self-luminous appearance without cessation. In this way, if appearance is taken as mind, wouldn't that become mere mind? No, it wouldn't. To consider mind as mere consciousness is the Mind-Only of doctrinal assertion. Here, appearance (364) is also one's own mind, because it is known to be free from anything to grasp. In the sutras of the final teaching, the definitive meaning, appearance is established as mind, mind as free from elaboration, and freedom from elaboration as union. The reason for this is that the Buddha turned the three wheels of Dharma, the first of which was associated with permanence and annihilation, and was therefore criticized. The final wheel, the definitive one, was turned and thus taught union. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: "There is no alaya, nor is there consciousness, there is no self-nature nor is there anything real, foolish children and speculators, like corpses, do not understand the true meaning." It also says: "Having settled in Mind-Only, one does not examine external objects. Having settled in the true meaning, one should transcend Mind-Only. The yogi who dwells in the absence of appearance, through that, sees the Great Vehicle." (365) Thus it was taught. One will gain mastery over the inseparability of appearance and emptiness. Thus, Rinpochepa said that there are four aspects of appearance as one's own mind: understanding, experience, realization, and completion. The first is: to understand intellectually that appearance is one's own mind. The second is: to experience that appearance and one's own mind are inseparable, free from the defilement of grasping at objects. The third is: to be certain that appearance is one's own mind, and to give rise to the definitive understanding of no object. The fourth is: appearance makes emptiness, and emptiness makes appearance, thus it arises. Furthermore, someone asked Dagpo Rinpoche: "Some great disciples say that appearance, mind, and dharmata are interchangeable, how are they interchanged?" Rinpoche waved his hand back and forth at a pillar in front of his bedroom, saying: "These (366) two are interchangeable." When Zurchung Sherab Drak was staying at Drak Gyawochen, a teacher thought he should refute him, so he engaged in Dharma discourse.

That venerable one refuted by saying, "The pillar is dharma," saying, "You have the pillar as dharma, I have the nature of dharma." Then he clapped his hands against each other. Again, by making "Unconditioned space is dharma," he said, "You have the unconditioned, I have the conditioned." Even if you sit in vajra posture in space, it will not become unconditioned; no matter what you do, you must clearly know that appearance and mind are inseparable. Some say that appearances are each their own mind, and they think that their own appearance and emptiness, and emptiness and appearance, must be inseparable, and they need to distinguish the differences between them. Even if this happens, will appearance not become not one's own mind? Some say that appearance comes from appearance, but it is not certain. Some appear as experiences, some appear as the self-appearance of dharma, so there is no need to negate them. Therefore, the appearance of afflictions will not cease, and the radiance will not disappear. When the appearance of desire arises, being separated from all grasping of essence, that is desire vajra, called discriminating awareness. Therefore, do not stop any appearance, not even the mere appearance that has not been distinguished by anything. If someone says that in the explanation of the tantras, it is explained that it is negated by the examples of the tala tree and the flesh-eating demon, that is not so, that is intended to negate excessive attachment to appearance, but in reality it is not negated. Now, regarding appearance as one's own mind, the best is realization, the middle is experience, and the worst is that a firm understanding of "it must be so" must arise. If this does not happen, it is like a bridge that has not crossed the river, or like shooting an arrow without seeing the target. That is, sometimes you should look at things with a target, such as a vase. Mainly, you should learn to be without support. If you think that this is a case of being without support, and you cling to having support, then that is wrong. Those previous ones are like clinging to a woman outside. Here, since appearance and mind are set as inseparable, you should make the support appear as without support, or make the without support appear as support. Those are the preliminaries. At the time of the main practice, the way of abiding is the same as before, and the so-called "appearing nakedly" is to look at it, to see whether things are or are not, and where they exist inside or outside the body. Moreover, due to the power of the habit of body and mind being one, you will feel that it exists inside the body, so you should enter or observe it.
