Furthermore, choose foods that are small in volume. For tactile nourishment, wear light and warm clothing. For the nourishment of sleep, avoid eating to excess. Do not sleep during the day. Consume food that supports celibacy. (352) If the pure elements of the body have not declined, relying on the body will cause conceptual thoughts to arise in the mind. Therefore, avoid foods and behaviors that harm purity, such as fire and sunlight. For the nourishment of mental thought, do not have hopes or doubts about whether food and drink will come or not. Instead, contemplate how to reveal the essence of the co-emergent wisdom that resides within oneself. For the nourishment of meditative absorption, if the body is in good condition, persist; if not, relax. Practice during meditation sessions. If the body is in poor condition, follow the methods described in Lamdre, such as alternating foods, alternating sun exposure, and alternating behaviors. Like feeding a lean horse, whip it with the whip of food and adjust it as needed. It is said to gently massage the waist. The exhaustion of lustful behavior. Although it is said to completely abandon any arising conceptual thoughts, now just grasp them with mindfulness. By doing so, abiding samadhi will arise, like abiding in the ocean. (353) Furthermore, make the meditation sessions short and frequent. The holy ones said, "Short sessions are frequent; frequent sessions are without fault." The method for upward training is: if consciousness becomes dull and drowsy, raise the gaze. Excite the senses, excite awareness, and leave consciousness clear and bright. In this way, the fault of dullness and drowsiness will naturally be eliminated, and awareness will become clear and bright, naturally arising. The method for downward training is: if the mind becomes agitated, lower the gaze towards customs and so on, relax the body and mind, separate from the desire to meditate, and relax. In this way, the fault of agitation will naturally be eliminated, and consciousness will return to its natural state, resulting in good abiding. The holy ones said, "Some say, when dull, raise up; (354) when agitated, gather in." But here it is said that through the application of gaze, consciousness is separated from objects. These two antidotes are like eliminating obstacles. Wrathful deities should look upwards, Shravakas who seek peace should look downwards, and Vajra eyes should look straight ahead. That is to say, those who prioritize signs should look upwards, those who prioritize pacifying the mind should look sideways, and those who prioritize union should look straight ahead. This is the teaching of the holy ones and the tradition of this Dharma. When training in various Sutras, conceptual thoughts naturally

This statement will not occur at any time or in any situation. This self-generated thought is the very essence of samsara. As it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization, "Great ignorance of discrimination is what causes one to fall into the ocean of samsara." And as it is said in the Praise of Manjushri, "From discrimination, not understanding, is what is called samsara, which does not exist. Because you are free from discrimination, therefore you are the Buddha." It is also said, "By thought, the net is completely dispelled, possessing a profound and vast body, the rays of Samantabhadra, shining everywhere, I prostrate." You great seal practitioners, do you have discriminating thoughts arising in meditation? If it is said that non-thought wastes life, then, let's use our own words to say this Dharma: First, slightly regard thought as a fault; in the middle, take discriminating thought as a friend; finally, there are three that are free from affirmation and negation. Although it is said that first, thought is regarded as an obstacle, it is not like abandoning it as if abandoning the chest, but relying on special symbolic methods, taking past events as objects, these will naturally stop. Future thoughts will stop arising. Now (356), thoughts will lose their taste and origin. Ignoring it, it will naturally disappear. The mind will remain still, grasping its own position, and the insight of recognizing oneself will arise. In this way, when the ignorance of discriminating thought is completely cut off, the natural arising of non-discriminating wisdom is the nature of Dharma. Thoughts will disappear, and appearances will be negated. If one follows discriminating thought, there will be no clear meaning appearing. Thus it is said. Among seeking view from meditation and cultivating meditation from view, this is seeking view from meditation, so it needs to abide. Abiding has no moisture. Subtle discriminating thoughts will not gather. Those who have attained realization cannot bear it. Discriminating thought cannot produce results. The appearance of form requires a pure and abiding mind. According to the general Buddhist law, one must also suppress afflictions with shamatha and vipashyana, and remove them from the root of vipashyana (357). The essence of meditation is the union of shamatha and vipashyana, the non-duality of skillful means and wisdom, the non-duality of appearance and emptiness, and so on. It cannot be understood as separation. Therefore, it is actually difficult to generate union, so one needs to seek shamatha and vipashyana. It is said in the Bodhicaryavatara, "Knowing that with the power of shamatha and vipashyana, one can cut off all afflictions, one should first seek calm abiding."
