and everything else, I pray: I take refuge in the Buddhas residing in the ten directions! I take refuge in the Dharma residing in the ten directions! I take refuge in the Sangha residing in the ten directions (220), as well as the mandala deities of the Guru and Yidam, and the mandala retinue of the Wisdom Protector Six-Armed One. I pray to the root and lineage Gurus, and the mandala deities of the Yidam. Please bless me to realize the state of Mahamudra. I pray to the sacred Dharma-protecting guardians, please ensure that when I practice Mahamudra, no internal or external obstacles arise. Thus, earnestly pray three times. Second, the actual introduction: The body sits in the lotus position, according to the seven-point posture of Vairochana, and rests upright in its natural state. The mind is free from the conceptual thoughts of wanting to meditate. The eyes, in the manner of an elephant, in the empty space in front (221), let awareness be without support, relax effortlessly in the three natural states. Completely dissolve without attachment, and rest without any modification. When resting in this way, ordinary awareness arises naturally without intention, which is called "self-arising." One's own awareness, clear and non-discriminating, is not stained by the impurities of good, evil, or neutral, free from the obscurations of grasping and clinging to conceptual thoughts, like the clear autumn sky, nakedly appearing. These two are one's own mind's unborn Dharmakaya, or the state of being free from the intention of ordinary awareness. After introducing it in this way, Niguma said: "Without intention, free from all hope and fear, I pay homage to you—ordinary awareness!" Saraha said: (222) "Ordinary awareness awakens in the center of the heart, now there is no need to ask anyone." Toktsé Zhap said: "Ordinary awareness awakens in the center of the heart, the six senses are purified, and bliss is continuous. All actions are meaningless, the root of suffering. There is no need to meditate, rest in the natural state." The Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita Sutra says: "The nature of all phenomena is such that whether the Buddhas appear in the world or not, these sentient beings always possess the Tathagatagarbha."

From the 'Manifestation of Enlightenment': The Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani, asked, 'From where should one seek the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment?' The Bhagavan replied, 'The unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment (223) should be sought from one's own mind.' Thus it is said. From the 'Samputi': 'Buddha resides in one's own body. Nowhere else is there a Buddha. Those obscured by the darkness of ignorance desire a Buddha other than the body.' Thus it is said. Therefore, the essence of Buddhahood in sentient beings is ever-present. Some say, 'If that is so, then there is no difference between delusion and liberation, and wandering in samsara is meaningless.' From the mouth of the wisdom dakini Niguma: 'Although sentient beings are inseparably endowed with the essence of Buddhahood, they wander in samsara due to four faults. First, they wander in samsara due to the fault of being too close to recognize it. Although the mind, clear, empty, and without grasping, is naturally present within oneself, it is not recognized. Although it is within oneself, (224) there is no certainty. Although constantly accompanied, it is not seen. It is like a blind person, because the eye cannot see the eye. If one does not recognize, one does not recognize the mind. Who does not recognize it? The mind itself does not recognize it. How does one not recognize it? One does not recognize it because of being together with the stain of dualistic grasping. As it is said in the 'Two Examinations': 'Sentient beings are indeed Buddhas, but they are obscured by sudden stains.' Thus it is said. Now, relying on the blessings of the noble lama, and on the three self-arisen wisdoms of symbolic means, etc., the ordinary consciousness, in the manner of clarity, emptiness, non-grasping, and non-duality of subject and object, recognizes its own nature, thereby the fault of being too close to recognize it is naturally liberated. As it is said in the 'Two Examinations': '(225) Eliminating that is Buddhahood itself.' Thus it is said. Second, the fault of not believing even when recognized because it is too easy is that those of small intellect find it difficult to believe even when introduced to the ordinary consciousness as being Buddhahood itself, because they think of the Buddha as having marks and signs, light and rays. That, the image of the Dharmakaya free from stains, is not the Buddha with marks and signs, like the image of a face in a mirror. The Buddha with marks and signs is the Dharmakaya itself. As it is said in the 'Eight Thousand Verses': 'Monks, I am Dharma.'
