Those who transcend karma fall into the Avici hell in an instant. So it is said. The teacher Nagarjuna said: When you see the lama in the assembly, turn your back on him. Go in secret and pay homage to him. Even if he is your own son, abandon him to others. Even if he is born into a noble royal lineage, he should never be kept as a servant in the doctrine. (202) Therefore, abandon the pride of self-righteousness and the wrong views of disrespect. With your body, be mindful of doing what is beneficial and timely for the lama. With your speech, constantly chant praises and prayers. With your mind, think only of virtues, and do not think of faults even for a moment. Even if faults seem to arise, think that they are your own impure illusions, and that the lama Buddha has no faults. Adjust your mind in this way. Offer without hesitation whatever objects of enjoyment are beneficial and timely for the lama, and whatever you like and cherish. As it is said in the Garland of Jewels: That which is inexhaustible desire, Whatever is most cherished, That (203) and that are offered, To the lama. So it is said. Do not think of being superior to others, and do not do good deeds with the desire for rewards, for this has the connection of following. So it is said. By alternately practicing the lama's prayer and the method of abiding, ordinary consciousness arises spontaneously without being brought to mind. Without being distracted by the actions of body and speech, the preliminary practice of remaining immovably in one's own place reaches its limit. If it does not arise, then practice in the manner of accumulating merit, which has two aspects: with support and without support. The first step in training with support is to train in the coarse, which is to first perform refuge, bodhicitta, lama's prayer, empowerment, and exhaling the breath. Then, on top of the three states of self-abiding, (204) with the gaze of an elephant, release the awareness into a state of non-reliance and non-grasping. As a result, a single coarse object such as a pillar or a vase appears as an object. On top of whatever appears, apply the gaze, staring in amazement. Do not engage in refutation or establishment with doubts about anything else. Without distinguishing between good and bad, etc., abide without fabrication, so that the object does not cease and there is no deliberate grasping at anything.

The awareness naturally arises in a state of non-conceptualization. Occasionally, straighten the body posture slightly. Keep the breath in its natural state as before. If you become weary of that, meditate on the Guru Yoga as before. At the end of the session, dedicate the merit towards enlightenment. Afterwards, during activities such as walking, sitting, and so on, maintain continuous and undistracted presence in that state of meditative equipoise. All actions of body, speech, and mind (205) should be performed slowly and mindfully, like those of a sick person. Consume nutritious food. Occasionally, receive massages. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and abstain from foods and behaviors that harm the subtle energies. Third, training in focusing on the subtle: By settling as before, subtle objects such as dust particles will appear as a single object of focus. Settle as before on whatever appears. Fourth, training in focusing on the near: As if looking within the crown of the head, settle on whatever subtle or coarse object appears. Fifth, training in focusing on the distant: By looking with a gazing posture at a wide open space, settle on whatever subtle or coarse object appears, such as a mountain peak. Sixth, training in focusing upwards: If there is slight sinking or awareness becomes (206) dull, then arouse awareness. Raise the gaze and, looking at the expanse of the sky or a mountain peak, settle as before. Seventh, training in focusing downwards: If awareness becomes slightly agitated, then lower the gaze and look at the bottom of a valley or a low-lying area. These two are methods for dispelling obstacles. Eighth, training in looking directly: If there is no affliction of sinking or agitation, then practice as previously explained in the context of subtle or coarse objects. Ninth, training in various sutras: Recite clearly sutras such as the Heart Sutra, and adjust the gaze from the perspective of the three states of self-arising. Tenth, training in various mantras: Recite short mantras such as the Mani Padma (Tibetan: མ་ི་པདྨེ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: मणि पद्मे, Sanskrit Romanization: maṇi padme, Literal Chinese meaning: Jewel in the Lotus), and train as before (207). Eleventh, training in various conversations: Sit among others who are talking about trivial matters or engaging in aimless chatter, and train in settling and adjusting the gaze in the same way as before. Twelfth, training in various activities: As it says in the sutra: "Walking, standing, sleeping, and sitting, be fully endowed with mindfulness." Look about a yoke's length ahead, and keep the mind while walking.
