Although the Great One is white in itself, it is still white. Hevajra and Chakrasamvara are blue in themselves, but still blue. My only hope is the Lama. No matter what I do, I have never been separated from the appearance of the Lama. Therefore, (someone) says that one attains Buddhahood in one lifetime, or that it will indeed happen like that. Kyer Gangpa said: To attain Buddhahood in one lifetime, one needs devotion to the Lama. For devotion to the Lama, one needs to remember the Lama again and again, like a mother whose only son has died. Sangye Nyenton (196) said: For devotion to the Lama, one needs to pray from the depths of one's heart, with tears flowing uncontrollably. Sangye Tonpa said: One needs to not lose mindfulness and wrong views. Some say that holding the Yidam deity as more important than the Lama is a wrong view. But this is not so. Teacher Sangye Shab said: In Manjushri Mitra, it says that choosing the mandala of Guhyasamaja will delay accomplishment, while Kharchen Za'tso Gyal chose the mandala of Vajrakilaya and had more devotion to Padmasambhava, so one should know the way in which accomplishment comes quickly. Some also say: It is unreasonable to contemplate the Lama as a Buddha. (197) If he is a Buddha, then there is no need to contemplate, and if he is not, then contemplation is meaningless. Some also say that it is unreasonable to think of the Lama as a Buddha because he does not appear to have the characteristics of marks and signs. This is actually a fault of one's own impure appearance, just as a person with jaundice sees a conch shell as yellow. Furthermore, just as Teacher Asanga meditated on Maitreya, or Prince Mukhyudzin meditated on Arya Manjushri, and Naropa saw Tilopa killing fish, and Sangye Shiwa and Sangye Sangwa saw Tara as a frowning old woman Tagama, and Maitripa clearly saw Shavaripa. Furthermore, just as Dombhipa was seen as a cowherd, Ghudhuripa appeared as a bird, Toktsepa (198) appeared as a beggar, Tagapa appeared as a weaver, Padma Vajra appeared as a farmer, and so on, these reasons should be understood in detail. In the Buddha Samayoga Tantra, it says: Sometimes peaceful, sometimes wrathful, sometimes accomplishing the deeds of great obstacles, all births and mountains are also like that. The song says: Wherever it appears, for the sake of sentient beings,

He benefits sentient beings. Appearing as a lion, he benefits sentient beings. Even appearing as a wine seller and a prostitute, he benefits sentient beings. Thus, it is said. In the sutras, it is also said that he appears as a king to subdue kings, as a renunciate to subdue renunciates, as a Brahmin to subdue Brahmins, and as an old Gandharva to subdue Gandharvas. As it is said (199), therefore, no matter how it appears, the previous quotations have determined that the true nature is the Guru Buddha himself. According to the Paramita system, the Guru is said to be similar to the Buddha, but according to the Vajrayana system, the Guru is said to be superior to the Buddha. In the Root Commentary on the Vows, it says, "Here, the Guru is unsurpassed." The meaning of this is that whatever the activity of body, speech, and mind, it is all for the benefit of sentient beings, and the Guru is superior in terms of kindness. Nowadays, in this time of the decline of the teachings, sentient beings have little merit, and many karmas are gathered together at once, so there is no opportunity for the actual Buddha to come and take care of them. Therefore, the Buddhas of the three times (200) appear in the form of a Guru, just as a Guru teaches a clever child, pointing out without error what should be abandoned and what should be adopted, and leading wisdom to the true meaning with profound and definite meaning. In the "Powerful River Sutra," it says, "In the last five hundred years, I will dwell in the form of a teacher. You should think that he is me, and at that time, you should respect him." Or, it is said that praying to the Buddha has great benefits, but it is not said that one can attain Buddhahood in one lifetime. If you pray to a Guru who has the qualities, then you should see all the Guru's actions as virtues and take all the Guru's words as a measure, otherwise it would be a big mistake. The Guru is an ordinary person (201), and even if the disciple is enlightened and has miraculous powers, he should not be arrogant and conceited, but should subdue his miraculous powers in front of the Guru, as Buddha Yeshe said, "Like Manjushri seeing a spiritual friend, or like the king of medicine, Jivaka, seeing Maudgalyayana's son." In the "Co-emergent Spontaneous Accomplishment," it says, "Some disciples, after attaining accomplishment, are arrogant and do not prostrate to the Guru, and do not listen to the Guru's teachings.
