Sa. When the object has not ceased, it arises while abiding in a state of non-conceptual awareness without any specific grasping (140). Thus it is said. This is flawed, because if the object has not ceased, it contradicts being a non-conceptual awareness, since the appearance of that pot and so on are all conventional. Furthermore, some who boast of being Madhyamikas say: Compassion focused on beings in the three realms, and the Perfection of Wisdom that realizes samsara and nirvana as emptiness, are sometimes practiced alternately, and sometimes practiced in union. However, mostly they fall into a state of indifference. So they say, but are the previously practiced alternating meditation and the later practiced union meditation the same or not the same? If they are the same, it becomes a fault of repetition, but if they are not the same, and the latter is practiced simultaneously, then that is also extremely unreasonable, because a deluded mind and ultimate emptiness cannot become one (141). Thus, the Lord Maitreya said: When that appears, the nature of reality does not appear, and when that does not appear, the nature of reality appears. Thus he said. The teacher Dignāga said: Other than conceptual thought, there is no other called samsara. When you are separated from that conceptual thought, you will always enter into peace. Thus he said. The teacher Dharmakīrti said: Two conceptualizations cannot occur simultaneously. Thus he said. The glorious Śrī Sambhūṭi said: Conceptual thought is great ignorance, it is the cause of falling into the ocean of samsara. If you abide in non-conceptual samādhi, you will become stainless like the sky. Thus he said. In the *Nāmasaṃgīti* it says: The realm of non-conceptuality is inexhaustible, the sacred realm of reality cannot be exhausted. (142) Thus it is said, and so on. To the sutras and tantras that show that the conventional and the ultimate cannot be one, they apply slander and only accumulate sin. Those who seek liberation should not follow such people even for a moment. However, mostly they fall into a state of indifference, which is the truth. Therefore, when the experience of *śamatha* arises in the mindstream, all the objects and subjects that are produced by conceptual thought and encompassed by grasping and fixation cease by themselves. The great Brahmin Saraha said: Just as a crow flying from a ship,

Furthermore, it is said that thoughts revolve and return to the same place. This is spoken of using the analogy of calm abiding as a ship and conceptual thought as a crow. Moreover, whatever support is obtained (143), whatever view is held as precious, will vanish like dust dulled by sunlight, and will eventually sink into the heart essence itself. Just as the sun sets and the dust in the sunlight vanishes, so too do the conceptual thoughts of grasping and the appearances of karma vanish. Furthermore, just as water is poured into water, so much water becomes the same taste. The mind possessing both faults and virtues cannot be measured by the protectors. This means that all conceptual thoughts of goodness merge into calm abiding, and nothing appears. The way to practice this is: for ignorance, there is no antidote. Just like a flame spreading in a forest, all appearances that come before you, you should unite with the root of emptiness (144). This means that when practicing calm abiding, whatever conceptual thoughts and karmic appearances arise, you should meditate on them as being imperceptible, like a tree meeting a flame. Some distinguish between the union of appearance and emptiness, the union of mind and emptiness, the union of bliss and emptiness, and so on, dividing the six unions. This is merely a careless statement made without understanding the true nature. Fourth, introducing vipassanā, there are two parts. First, identifying its essence: As mentioned before, in the case of calm abiding with an object of focus, when the object of focus disappears, it is said that things like blurred vision, shimmering light, and flickering appearances occur. Whatever appearances arise, they are the wisdom of vipassanā. It destroys all obscurations of afflictions and obscurations of knowledge (145), and increases the qualities of the stages and paths from higher to higher. As the bodhisattva Śāntideva said: "With vipassanā endowed with calm abiding, it is known that afflictions are completely destroyed. Therefore, one should first seek calm abiding, which accomplishes manifest attainment without attachment to the world." Therefore, the order is also to first practice calm abiding and then practice vipassanā. Such a union of appearance and emptiness is the correct view that does not invert reality, it is the co-emergent wisdom of the nature of mind.
