If it is said that there is no awareness whatsoever, then as introduced and explained above, whatever objects appear, other than one's own mind, there is nothing that is truly established externally (137). This is determined through personal experience. Thus, all illusory appearances appear as mind. As stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: "The mind disturbed by habitual tendencies, appears as objects. Objects are not real, it is only mind. Seeing external objects is a mistake." Also, as stated in the Avatamsaka Sutra: "Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." The teacher Virupa said: "All phenomena are mind, appearing as reflections." The teacher Dharmakirti said: "Because of the simultaneous apprehension of the object, blue and the cognition of it are not different." The Bodhisattva Shantideva said: (138) "Who made the burning ground of iron? From where did those masses of fire arise? All such things, the Buddha said, are the work of sinful minds." And so on, countless sutras, tantras, and authoritative treatise writers have said this. Because there are too many, I have not written them for fear of length. Third, introducing the mind of shamatha. The way to experience that such a deluded mind as described above has no truth in reality is: In the previous section on objects with support, holding the mind on appearances and meditating for a long time, when the samadhi becomes stable, saying "the object seems to disappear," that is the experience of determining the unreality of delusion, which has only arisen a little in the mind stream (139). This is what is called the emptiness of phenomena being empty of their own nature in many sutras and tantras. Nowadays, many treatise writers who pretend to be Madhyamikas, as well as Mahamudra practitioners, Dzogchen Semde practitioners, and many meditators known as Chöd practitioners, are satisfied with just that, and think that there is no other profound emptiness of reality beyond that. They say that this is the primordial, co-emergent wisdom. Without considering such key points of practice as described above, they think that karmic appearances have disappeared, or that the mind was confused at that time, so they readjust their posture, grasp with mindfulness, and then release.
