When placed on top of the three, it greatly increases the power of meditative absorption. For these, one should do the preliminary practices, taking refuge, generating bodhicitta, guru yoga, the concluding dedication, and exhaling stale air during session breaks. In particular, whenever falling asleep or waking up, one should raise the pillow high and sleep in the lion posture, etc. Keep the eyes looking downwards through the eyelids, maintaining emptiness. By keeping the mind in a natural, unelaborated state, one should also become accustomed to the luminosity of sleep, which is extremely important. It is not necessary for all of these stages of visualization to be strictly in order, as some may reach the standard of the preliminary practices with the first or second step due to differences in faculties (132). The standard of the preliminary practices is: Unfabricated, ordinary awareness arises naturally. The standard of its stability is: It is not disturbed by the actions of body and speech. After such a state has arisen, then there are three aspects to introducing the profound meaning of the preliminary practices. First, offering torma: When these preliminary practices have been attained, arrange the supports of the yidam and dharma protectors, prepare the five tormas and vast offerings, and a complete accumulation of tsok implements. Then, the teacher enters the yoga of the deity, performs recitation and the generation stage practice, and makes offerings, especially offering a vast torma to the dharma protectors. After that, in the space in front, visualize on a jeweled throne supported by eight lions, on a lotus and sun cushion, the root guru is the essence of the Dharmakaya, the form of the Sambhogakaya, the activity of the Nirmanakaya, (133) one who cannot be satisfied by just looking at. Around him, visualize the lineage gurus, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and the wisdom dharma protectors surrounded like piled clouds. The students offer outer, inner, and secret offerings to them, as well as a golden mandala, and whatever pure offerings they can afford, holding flowers in their joined palms, filled with strong devotion and reverence. Second, making supplications: Recite in the mouth: I beseech the root and lineage gurus, the deities of the mandala of yidams, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, to introduce me to the meaning of the Great Seal, and to bless the realization to arise in the continuum! I beseech the wisdom dharma protectors

I beseech the protectors to grant me Mahamudra and to ensure that no obstacles arise during my practice (134). Recite this prayer three times. Then, sit in the seven-point posture of Vairochana. Gaze at the empty space in front of you with the eyes of an elephant. Cut off the flow of thoughts of the three times and rest without any intention of meditation. This will cause a genuine, unfabricated non-conceptual samadhi to arise in your mindstream. As the Vajra verse says: "To the ordinary awareness that is free from all hope and fear, I prostrate." Khasying named and explained this profound meaning as "the measure of the first preliminary." And what is now being taught as "unfabricated non-conceptual samadhi" is the same thing. Third, introducing that same thing. Generally, there are four ways to introduce: introducing all appearances as mind (135), introducing the deluded mind, introducing the mind of shamatha, and introducing the mind of vipashyana. First, introducing appearances as mind, as the Vajra Song says: "Apart from the precious mind, There are neither Buddhas nor sentient beings. All the various activities of consciousness, Have not even a little that is external." The great Brahmin said: "Mind alone is the seed of all things, From which arise samsara and nirvana. It grants the fruit of desires, I prostrate to the mind like a wish-fulfilling jewel." Therefore, whatever pure or impure appearances arise, one should be certain that they are all one's own mind, and that there is not even a little that is external. (136) Second, introducing the deluded mind. As Khasying said in the context of introducing "dependent appearances," like placing the mind on pebbles, wood, and so on. Focus the mind on any object in front of you and look at it without distraction. At that time, without losing sight of the appearance in front of you, look to see where the internal grasping consciousness is located, inside or outside the body, above or below. After holding it like that for a moment, ask where it is located. If someone says that it is located in a place like the heart, then it means that you have not yet fully grasped the external appearance, so you should look more carefully. Apart from the external object, the grasper
